Hi!

Well, I am in trouble... I've got the latest stable version of Amarok (1.4.1-r2) installed and I saw this "Advanced Tag Feature" been mentioned on the main site. I activated it by adding the appropiate entry into amarokrc.

Now my problem: After a full rescan of all my mp3 files (20k+) I first lost all the statistics for every file and then the even worse thing I discovered that most of my mp3 files lost their id3-tags. All the meta information are still available trough Amarok, but other programms (e.g. EasyTag, id3info) don't see the id3tags anymore.

1) I am not sure, whether they are really gone or just saved in a way that other programs cannot retrieve them
2) Or if they were really deleted and the interpreter, album, title etc. information are still stored in the mysql database.

In any case, help me, please! What did I do wrong and what can I do to recover my id3 tags?

About the system I am running Amarok on:

Gentoo Linux
2.6.16-gentoo-r9 #1 PREEMPT i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+
32bit-system
taglib-1.4(-r1)
amarok-1.4.1(-r2)
KDE 3.5.3

Any help is appreciated very much. Thank you in advance.

Easytags and id3info both do not read id3v2.4. Any program that does can still read all your tags just fine. This means, any program that uses taglib. Or anything else modern, whichs include ole xmms (at least with the patches given it by gentoo).

http://eyed3.nicfit.net/ makes a good id3info replacement. It also has a --to-v2.3 option which might fix your issue.

Anyways in response from similar feedback, in SVN we write back id3v1 tags as well.

Edit:
Just tried out the --to-v2.3, it does in fact work well. I believe ID3 2.3 doesn't support unicode so converting from 2.4 to 2.3 might not always be lossless, so test stuff out first if you have non-latin1 characters in tags.
Edit again:
id3info is fine with --to-v2.3, but easy tag doesn't see it until you convert to id3v1 (--to-v1.1). Meh.
