There's something for superkaramba, if you are running this.
I for myself have added a couple of shortcuts in the KDE hotkey feature which use DCOP calls to control amarok.

Amarok provides a system tray icon by default. If you right-click it, you'll get a bunch of useful control options. Isn't that what you want?

that's what i'm doing currently...i was wanting to know if it were possible to have the playback controls layed out on the desktop panel. that way i could skip to next track with one click of a button instead of right-clicking the tray icon then selecting the task.

multimedia control applet should do this I think. I'll confirm in a day or so if you haven't found it already.

Perhaps this is useful for you:

(Note: My menu entries are on German and I don't know the English ones exactly.)

If you use KDE: Rightclick on the Kicker. Go to Kicker-Menu, go to Add to Kicker, go to Specialbutton and click on Non-KDE-Program.
Now enter a dcop-command, choose an icon and enter a description. (I attached a sample.)

More interesting commands are:
play, pause, next, prev, stop, showOSD, mute, volumeDown, volumeUp

There is also, as was mentioned earlier, a media control applet for kicker.

kicker context menu > Add applet to panel...
find Media Control in the list and add.

If it doesn't work with Amarok, you might have to go into the applet's configuration (right-click > Configure Media Control) and tell it that you want it to control Amarok.

I like this better than the previous solution because it also shows the progress slider, which is easier to read than the systray icon filling up.

(also pictured is the sound mixer applet, which I find to be more convenient than kmix in the systray)
