It has become patently clear that most of the problems you post here are related to not having the correct packages installed.
This is what you need to read: http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/MP3_on_Kubuntu This offers some background on the issue: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats Note, all new topics asking about the problem of amarok skipping through playlists and finishing successfully WILL be merged with this thread. EDIT: Apparently, this is only a problem with dapper (6.06) packages for amarok prior to 1.4.2. Upgrading amarok to 1.4.2 http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Download is the best solution. Alternatively, you can "sudo chmod +x /usr/lib/amarok/install-mp3"

FYI: Here are two problems and solutions related to kubuntu, restricted codecs, and installation. It may be helpful for someone else as inexperienced as I am!
1) I tried to install the 1.4.2 package (linked above) on a fresh kubuntu dapper distro but apt reported that libifp4 could not be found so it couldn't satisfy amarok's dependencies. I enabled the universe and multiverse repositories and it installed fine. How-To: http://linux.about.com/od/kubuntu_doc/a/kubudg22t04.htm 2) After installation I got the "skipping through the whole playlist instantly" behavior mentioned in this thread. I knew about the restricted codec problem but I thought the amarok 1.4.2 package installed them automatically. (as explained in the "Easy Going" section of the link at the top of this thread) So, I used the "Step-By-Step" instructions and all was well. |

Admin, can we unsticky this? it is dapper info that is three upgrades old. A good search of the forums will reveal this info.

As far as I can see, the information is still generally relevant - is this not the case? If so, please feel free to post updated information, because people still seem to have trouble with restricted formats.

Yeah I agree that we could unsticky this. Amarok on Kubuntu installs MP3 automatically now quite flawlessly, and also the post is referring to 1.4.2 and Dapper and such.
