Moving Stats and Collection to another machine

Finally got around to using Amarok when it was included in my pcLinuxOS Jr. install a few weeks ago.  I can see now that I can't do without it.  I'm loading my collection from a network share, but will be rebuilding my current Amarok box and now that I've started accumulating stats for a few weeks, I don't want to lose them.

Questions

1) How to best back up collection info and stats.

2) How to move that info onto another fresh build on another machine.  (Will have to mount directory on same mount point I assume)

3) Will Amarok db be able to keep track of history if I use external program for updating tags  (e.g. Synchronizing spelling of Band names).  What if directory names change?

Current envirionment
pcLinuxOS Jr 0.93
Amarok 1.4.1 (Using KDE 3.5.3)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi guys

I have a short Q. i have move from kubuntu to Suse yesterday, and installed 1.4.2 on it (been using it in the last week on kubuntu). I am trying to move my ratings to suse (i spent 3 weeks!! daily rating them) and so far with no success. it seems there should be a simple way to do it, can anyone please help? its really important for me to have these correct tags (ratings)

Thx alot in advance and to all the great Amarok Team!!

  cp -rf ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok ~/amarok-bak
will create a directory in your home which includes the database, playlist data etc. etc.
for configuration do:
  cp -~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc ~/amarokrc

just drop the directory and the amarokrc file to a backup media (cd or usb mass storage for example)

if you're not waiting for 1.4.3 release, you will have to mount the music at _exactly_ same location
if you wait for 1.4.3 you will probably just have to turn AFT (amarok file tracking) on and then on new system you have to adept the collection configuration in amarok, so that it uses the correct path, thanks to AFT, stats will probably not be lost

3) Will Amarok db be able to keep track of history if I use external program for updating tags  (e.g. Synchronizing spelling of Band names).  What if directory names change?

tagging will be no problem, but renaming the location without AFT (pre 1.4.3) will most likely cause statsloss - the latter can be done with amarok board tool, just select some artists/albums/genres/whatever in collection tab and have a look at the right button menu, there should be something like "organize files..." this will take care of reorganizing files according to their tags

Annoyed with bbcode since 1999.

thx Harald for the answer

unfortunantly i does not work for me ..i have moved both the amarok dir and the rc file and when i start amarok on my new machine (SUSE 10.1) amarok automaticlly starts to import new media and at the end of the process nothing shows up, and then it starts again...i have been using 1.4.2 on both machines and kde 3.5.4 so i cant see whats wrong, anything else i can try?

thx alot in advance

In 1.4.2 just having the same mount points doesn't do it anymore I don't think. You would have to muck around in SQL to get it to work.

Wait for 1.4.3 or use SVN, then your stats should be transfered.

I'm afraid it didn't work for me either- and that was when I attempted to move the app from one build to another.

I'm going to have to spend some time and get this working.  The ability to back up the app regularly with the option to bring it up on another machine / hard drive is one that I consider pretty crucial - as one who has had occasional hard drive failures and knows that I will have more in the future.  I guess I know where I'll be spending my spare time for the next while

I'll post back with any positive results in the future.
