Wait for amarok-extras-nonfree 1.4.2 I guess.
Or install a distro with better multimedia support.

FC5 has good multimedia support...I have been using it for a media server for a year or so....Very stable and capable....The key is setting up your repos correctly so you have access to packages with all the goodies enabled...like livna or fresh....look here:
to get things working again you can...
to make sure you have the latest xine-lib and devel package installed.....and then download and compile the amarok source tarball. I just did this myself. Also, you'll need:
the latest taglib and taglib-devel package.... Here is a good help guide for FC5: http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html And another: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-fc5.html |

No it doesn't. Fedora itself has lousy media support when it comes to closed formats. I won't say that this isn't a legitimate choice on their part, but though I enjoyed using Fedora for nearly a year this was one of my reasons to leave it (I'll grant it was a minor one). What you explained (and I snipped) is that external projects can give Fedora good multimedia support. That's great, but having the support reside outside the official distro was/is actually your problem this time. Livna can only build their new amarok-extras-nonfree 1.4.2 after Fedora's official new amarok 1.4.2. If you update in the time between you lose the multimedia support precisely because it wasn't from Fedora. I'm not trying to persuade you against Fedora, if it works for you that's great. But there is a difference between a distro with good multimedia support and a distro that can be given multimedia support from external sources.

Hi everyone,
I have a similar (or the same) problem. Installing the new amarok-nonfree-extras didn't fix it. I then completely removed amarok, erasing all evidence that it ever existed on my computer, and reinstalled it. I did it both by source and using yum with livna repositories. This problem has been consistant. The xine-engine plugin is in /usr/lib/kde3 and the ./configure script shows that it's installing with xine support NOT helix-engine support. Amarok only show options for Helix, and void-engine after all that. bblood, I notice we have slightly different versions of xine-lib. I have these:
Is there a difference between the livna and fc5 rpms that could cause the issue?

well, I just did another compile by source with amarok, using those xine-libs:
xine-engine still won't show, and editing amarokrc doesn't fix it.

ok, so it's working now.
All I had to to was restart my x-server. Maybe amarok wasn't cleaning itself properly. As for the difference between the xine-lib repos, the livna rpms support mp3.

Happy to hear it is working....I Just compiled and installed 1.4.3 and so far so good.....I had been having weird random playback problems where some tracks would seem to play (movement in the graphic eq) but there was no sound. Not sure if this was amarok or xine related.....or if it is the fade/crossfade feature.....
No problems building collection any more.....finally... amaroK really is a great player! |
