HFS+ ipod and Amarok 1.4.1 on Mepis 6.0 - won't connect

I am using a firewire ipod with Amarok and Mepis 6.0.  When I attach the ipod, it automatically mounts in Mepis at /media/ipod, the file system opens in Konqueror, and I get the tab on the side of Amarok for 'media device'. When I click the connect icon in Amarok I get this message in a yellow popup;

'Media Device: failed to create lockfile on iPod mounted at /media/ipod: Read-only file system'

If I go into the ipod through the 'Files' tab, I can find and play music at /media/ipod/ipod_control/music.  When I select the 'media device' tab, however, I do not get a music list.  I have tried various other mounting/connecting schemes, to no avail.  I have also tried to employ the tools in hfsutils and hfsplus to gain access to the file system, also no luck.  I'm a relative newbie with Linux, so am probably missing something simple.

Can anyone tell me how to get this done so that the ipod will connect?  At one point in the past I was using an older version of Amarok with an older version of Mepis (non-Ubuntu) and was able to connect...can't remember much about that setup, though.  I want to stay with HFS+ if possible, since I also connect to an eMac.

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

regards,

Mike

There won't be any problem playing files from the ipod because only reading is necessary.  You'll need the ipod to be mounted as read/write, but you'll need to speak to mepis people about how to do that.

Seb, thanks for the reply.  I'd really like to be able to transfer songs and podcasts to the ipod, and that's why I was trying to get the connection right.  Like I said, I can find and play files through the 'files' tab, but I can't manage the songs and podcasts on the ipod from Amarok the way it is now.

As you suggested, I will also post on Mepis to see if there is a way to mount HFS+ partitions as read/write.
