OK, I'm using Kubuntu 6.06.1 with Amarok 1.4.3. I've never had a problem until this weekend when suddenly (and I know what that sounds like, but honestly I haven't installed anything recently, and the only things that have updated (from memory) have been things like openssl, and all of those are from standard repositries) Amarok went quiet half way through a playlist. It was quite happily playing a song (It had played an album and a half), when my wife double clicked on a track to listen to it and all the sounds stopped. Amarok was still playing (I could see the equalizer bars going), and if I turned my amp volume up to max I could more or less hear the track. The system itself was still working though. System sounds were fine, playing a song in VLC worked (breifly, it exhibited the same problem on later boots), and if I loaded a java player called softsqueeze and streamed music through my slimserver I could listen to music fine (this is my current only method of listening to music)
I put it down to something being clicked wrong, and restarted amarok. Sounds still effectively non existent. I rebooted the PC. Sounds now fine! Woo. Couple of songs later, no sound, same problem. An this is where I am still at. Amarok loads fine, plays a couple of tracks (even known tracks, ones that have worked fine for years), and then ... no sound. System still making it's beeps and notifications, softsqueeze works fine. All normal players shot. I've tried different engines (gstreamer), and different subsystems(?) (OSS, ALSA) makes no difference. At the minute the system is at default (again), xine engine, ALSA output. Kubuntu sound system also at default settings. Nothing has been touched or played with (I believe in "If it works, don't touch it") as I have a crash and burn VM machine for that sort of thing on a laptop. Anyone got any ideas / suggestions? Cheers, Steve |
