Disable "Watch folders for Changes" in the collection setup.

That solved the problem.

Does that mean that Amarok was looking for changes in the directories every minute?

Weird. I hope it gets fixed.

Yes, but normally that does not generate any perceivable performance hit. What filesystem is your music on?

All my partitions are ext3

EDIT: my 2 IDE hard disks have a 16MB cache.
