Various Artists?

Wed Oct 11, 2006 11:09 am
Hello, I've been using Amarok for a while now, and I think it's a great player. I only have one question, I've got my collection sorted as Genre/Artist/(Year) Album, but my compilation albums and splits don't appear under a separate Various Artist folder, I have to manually add all the artists of a compilation to put the entire album in my playlist. Am I just not looking good or did I do something wrong?
I already tried right-clicking on the compilation albums and selecting "Show Under Various Artists" but it didn't help. When I change to the standard view I can see a folder called Various Artists and the correct albums are under there so I don't really know what's going on.

Can anyone help me?

I don't think it's a bug... It's your sorting system. You got Genre/Artis/Album ... Therefore the Artists of Individual Tracks are listed... I think it's one of these "Most people like it that way"-Things... Just make the best of it...

Meh, first thing I don't like about Amarok then :(

Does anyone know why "people like it that way"? Why does it work on Artist/Album and not on Genre/Artist/Album? Isn't it possible to have a "Various Artists" folder under each genre folder?

Yeah... you're kinda right with that... I don't like it either... But you can manually switch to Genre /Album... I use that one... don't really need the Artist to select my music...
It's just...
When you tell the collection to show the artists, it does exactly that... it's not wrong is it?
The Idea behind he Compilation-Setting is, after all, to have the right Artist set in each Track's ID3-Tag, but to have the whole Album shown under Various Artists, and not under seperate Artists ...
I understand what you want, you could achieve it, by using "Varius Artists" as the Artist in ID3-Tag...
I think many people like to be able to choose what they hear, by selecting the Artist...

I don't understand your point, actually, if I tell the collection to show the artist grouped under genre, it doesn't use the Various Artists, but if I tell it to use Artist/Album, it works. That's not really consistent. Why not have a setting that enables or disables the "Various Artists" grouping of compilations/splits?

And it's really not practical to tag all my splits and compilations as Various Artists, and besides, it doesn't look nice.

Maybe I'm just being anal or something, and this isn't meant as a flame or something, not against you, and not against the Amarok developers.

I understand your point. I only try to explain why it is like it is...
Besides, I don't like it that way either.

I would love an option to have Various Artists listed in every View-Setting, but the Amarok-Developers try to keep Amarok as simple as possible and therefore don't include every option somebody would like... Every new option could create new bugs...

I think it's right what you say, It would be cool to be able to tell amarok to always show Vaeious Artists in the Collection.
But I think it's not the most needed feature... Okay ... I think we both understand what we are talking about, so I don't need to write the same thing over and over again

Keep amaroKing!

Yeah, it's not like I can't live with this, and it's still a great program (and I've tried a lot of players). Guess I'll just have to add my compilations via the file browser
