Hi all.
I have an old laptop with xubuntu 6.06 here. Well it´s not THAT old, a P3 with 512M Ram. I am using it as an jukebox with amarok, attached to my 200G mp3-server via samba. Everything works fine now, but i want to take it one step further. So i was wondering if i could boot from gdm directly into amarok without any windowmanager. On exit amarok the system would go back to gdm/kdm and i could choose from "full desktop session" to "amarok only session". That would be nifty? Any suggestions? Links? |

Don't think it will work. I seem to remember you can run simple applications without a window manager, but what happens if you open any of the tools? They are separate windows, and without a window manager, you can only display one window.

Basically, what you want, is this:
http://amarok.kde.org/forum/index.php/t ... 184.0.html It's about the 1000th request in this direction but unfortunately, it's not done yet. I hope one day it will happen tho! For now I'd just use this: http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=46488 Not very advanced plugin, but it's a good start... |

ok, thanks for the info.
My problem is, that KDE and Gnome both are sooo slow. XFCE is a bit faster but i don´t need all the stuff that comes along with Xubuntu. I guess i´m gonna install kubuntu to get all the KDE-libs and then install fluxbox or another lightweight-wm on top. It´s a pity that there is no suitable distro for slow computers out there. dsl and fluxbuntu both suck. And mephis has no good translations. And no sir, i´m not going to spend a weekend configuring gentoo. |

I am also running on a P3 (1Ghz)with 512 MB, but a desktop model, and I don't find it 'soo' slow.
I did also had experience with a PIII (400Mhz) with 512 MB. In the beginning I was running mandriva 2006 and it was very slow. I changed to the last Kubuntu and it is much better. My PIII is also running the same Kubuntu. Sp |
