What makes a Podcast a Podcast, and not just another mp3 file?

Hi all,

I'm sure it might've been visited earlier, but I can't find exactly the answer to this subject so figured I would ask again.

What exactly makes a podcast a podcast when it comes to the iPod Nano? I've got several podcasts that I'm downloading and MANUALLY adding either at work (using iTunes for Windows) or at home (Amarok v1.4.3 on Ubuntu 6.06.1).

When I open up Amarok and go to the Media Device section, there are three podcasts listed under the Podcast section, but a majority of the files are listed under the respective "artist" instead. What I add at work seems to end up under the Podcast list, while what I add at home with Amarok seems to get added under the artist.

In checking the track info (tags) for any of the files listed under Podcasts, the Composer tag is greyed out and blank, while the files listed under the artist have a Composer tag with CAN be edited, though its blank.

Its trully annoying that podcasts can show up under two different locations when trying to update the iPod and was hoping there was an answer on what I can do to have the iPod recognize podcasts as podcasts and music as music, even if its a piece of software outside of Amarok with teaches the iTunes database the type of file.

Or is there a piece of software that I can use at work in lieu of iTunes and is Amarok friendly, and doesn't require its own directory on the iPod (like Yamipod does)?

Thoughts?

I gather what makes something a podcast is the method of retrieval. Amarok keeps track of podcasts that it fetches via rss, so I suspect it would have trouble recognising pre-fetched podcasts *unless* you add the feed info for that podcast to amarok, then put the already fetched files in the appropriate location. I'm not sure, however, whether Amarok uses any other tracking info. One of the devs will probably be able to shed more light on the way the podcasts are stored on your ipod though.

The answer to your initial question is that they are just audio (or video, in particular cases) files!
