not playing music

i just downloaded amarok, and it seemed to install fine, but doesn't play back any music.  i import a playlist and it just spends about a second looking at each song, and then says it's done playing them back.  any ideas what could be wrong?

i'm on ubuntu 6.06 [gnome].
