Hi,

I'm looking at buying one of the new 2nd generation iPod Nanos. For it to be useful, I need to find out if it is going to work with Linux and Amarok. Are they supported? I couldn't find anything on the wiki that says which ones are supported.

I've found several threads on ubuntuforums about people who couldn't get their new Nanos to work; it's got something to do with changes Apple made to some of the files on the iPod. Have these problems now been resolved?

I also found people who mentioned their Nano stopped working in Linux after iTunes did a firmware update after they bought it. Is this still a problem? For instance, should you not do firmware updates when they are available?

Thanks for the great software by the way. Amarok is a joy to use! :-)

Thanks.

If you check out the wonderful Wiki that has been provided.  You will find this wonderful article

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Device:IPod

Yes the Nano 2nd generation is supported, it may be required for you to first set the device type in gtkpod.  Other then that, yes it works, yes it transfers Artwork.

Anything else we can answer?

I don't understand why I deserve such a sarcastic reply.

The only reference to the 2nd gen ipods is under the "artwork not working heading":

"Recent iPod firmware versions (newer than mid 2006, and the firmware on 2nd gen iPod nanos, 5.5 gen iPods and the 2nd gen iPod shuffle) only create an empty iPod_Control/Device/SysInfo file. But this is used by libgpod for determining the kind of iPod you have. And libgpod has to know your iPod model for transferring artwork correctly. A work-around is to use a recent version of gtkpod for setting the iPod model manually (this sets the model version string in the SysInfo file)."

Nowhere does it say something unambiguous like "transferring music, playlist management etc. is supported on all generations of iPods". Because of this, I felt the need to ask someone before I spent a lump of money on something that might not work with amarok.

It would be useful for users if http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Devices had a list of all confirmed working products for the various media players out there.

The cited page is a wiki page. You're welcome to extend it. We'd be happy if you could start a table for the compatibility with various media devices. You could start with the info mentioned in this thread, and then hopefully other people will complete the table.

Now this is a little unfair - the original poster was requesting information about a device he is yet to purchase. How can he possibly be expected to KNOW whether it works if the wiki doesn't say so, and he doesn't ask for clarification?

To anyone else with an ipod (or any other media device) it would be great if you could post your known working setups, or any other tips, on the wiki so others can benefit.

OK, I've created a table with all known ipod models (with help from wikipedia). I've marked the 2nd gen ipod shuffle with a "?" mark as I don't know if it works (I assume it does though). The rest I've marked as working, which is true as far as I know. Is this accurate?

Also, what specific features are supported? Is playlist management, music transfer, video transfer, art transfer etc. supported on all models? It would be good to note exceptions in the table.

Thank you very much for creating this table!

I think that the 2nd gen shuffle needs have its SysInfo file edited (e.g. by gtkpod). Otherwise it won't be detected as a shuffle and the special shuffle data structures probably won't be written. But this is only guessing, as I don't have one to check.
