i am great fan of amarok since versions < 1.2. i used it all the time, with gstreamer then xine, everything worked fine. i dont remember when exactyly my problem began.
i have gentoo and the same problem occur with:
alsa 1.0.14-r1, 1.0.12, 1.0.11
amarok 1.4.4 1.4.3-r1 1.4.4-r2 (ive even compiled it by myself without emerge)
xine-lib 1.1.2 1.1.3
everyting beside amarok work great. i dont know what to do, ive changed asoundrc.conf few times and now i have sth like that

pcm.intel8x0 {
        type hw
    card 0
}

ctl.intel8x0 {
        type hw
        card 0
}

dmix is workin correctly. i dont know what to do. heard that bug can be on amd_64 i have x86. of course when xine is busy i can play audacious or mplayer without problem. it occurs only when song is changed manually or by amarok. crossfade is off. oh and when i switch to helix amarok do the same thing, hang xine. its very irritating cause xine gets busy usualy after one song. i heard also that flash in firefox can be a problem, but without runnin firefox it does the same.
maybe i can do some changes to ~/.kde/share/apps/amarok/xine-config
help my struggle last for few weeks and i must use audacious (sorry for my bad english ;) )

edit:
maybe i will add that i used my old amarok config that was in ~/.kde/share/apps and config, but when i moved that files and amarok configuration was clean the sam problem still exists. i use mysql but without it the same thing is happening
im slowly starting to give up
