Not sure whether these should go under "Usability", but I'll start by assuming that I'm simply missing some existing functionality.
I'm a new Amarok user, having just installed Kubuntu. So versions are: Amarok 1.4.3 (using KDE 3.5.5), on top of Ubuntu Edgy. I'm having annoying difficulties with the assorted searches that Amarok provides to external sites. For example. In the cover manager, I'm trying to get it to find a cover for "Bryan Adams" (by Bryan Adams), on the amazon.co.uk website. It finds various covers, but not the one I want. I can understand the difficulty, given the generalness of the query (since it doesn't specify that Bryan Adams is the album title, it gets the entire back catalog. Anyway, manually, I can find the correct cover, but is there then a nice way of importing it into Amarok? Currently, I'm saving the image to my home directory, and then invoking "Set Custom Cover" to reload it. It might be nice if I could change the query string to pull it in directly though. (It might not: I haven't thought about this very hard, so my current mechaism might be the least bad in most people's eyes.) In the Context panel, I'm currently playing the first track (Heartless) from Heart's 1978 album, "Magazine". It's paused. In the Context panel, I see the other Heart albums I've got, one of which is "Heart". It's got the same problem as Bryan Adam's album, and is displaying the wrong album cover. I've downloaded the correct image from Amazon, and installed it in the Cover Manager, but the context panel still shows the original (incorrect) thumbnail. When I ask to see the fullsize version, it does show the correct fullsize version, but the thumbnail still doesn't change. Hopefully it will do so when the track changes, and the context needs updating. However, if I simply click on the thumbnail, instead of getting the correct information from Amazon, I get a popup telling me "There is no product information available for this image". That'll be because I didn't install it direct from Amazon then. So back to the first problem. If I switch the context to the Music tab, then Wikipedia's disambiguation gives me articles on Heart (the organ), Magazine (as a published medium) or Heartless (from the Kingdom Hearts game). Is there any way of telling Amarok to use "Heart_(band)", "Magazine_(album)" and "not currently available" instead? The Lyrics search can't find the right lyrics either, and offers me some suggestions, all of which are wrong. But the "Search" button at the top of the panel goes to google, and gets 10 out of 10 for the first page. So the supplied lyrics search has some issues, does it? And finally: it is possible to load a non-playing track into the context panel, to see what it does, without upsetting the statistics collection by actually playing it? |

Answering some of my own points.
Once the correct album has been found manually on amazon, the URL will be something like: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bryan-Adams/dp/ ... F8&s=music The product ID is that alpha-numeric sequence immediately following dp. So in this case, B000006SBY. Pasting that value back into the Cover Manager's "New Search" dialogue does work, and generates the correct links when the album is re-encountered in the context browser. Woo! (Still leaves issues with the Wikipedia and lyrics links though...) |
