AmaroK cannot play .mp3 files

Sat Jan 13, 2007 9:43 pm
Great player, works on my other machines, but my main one...

I did my research first and made sure to read the (k) ubuntu forums, although I am using Mepis 6.0.  I have been unable to get help from Technalign.

When I launch I get this message:

Amarok cannot currently play mp3 files.

Of course I clicked the “Install mp3 support” link.  No workee.  I quit  amarok, Then I (through synaptic) “completely” removed Amarok and the amarok-xine file.  Then I reinstalled it.  Went through the setup process again, then the same message.

I read http://amarok.kde.org/forum/index.php/t ... 589.0.html and made sure the universe-multiverse repositories were checked. My repositories are
http://apt.mepis.org/6.0/ (mepis)
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (breezy)
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (dapper)
http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (dapper-security)
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (dapper-upadates)
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (dapper-backports)
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ (dapper) universe

I tried removing libxine and reinstalling.  No dice.

Tried to run the script from the /use/lib/amarok/install-mp3.  A box comes up and nothing happens.

I DID get the message http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists ... elease.gpg: Temporary failure resolving 'security.ubuntu.com'.  That fixed itself overnight.

I went to the readme first page and did sudo apt-get install libmad0 libxine-extracodecs, but all were newest and would not upgrade.

I also did
sudo su -c "echo \"deb dapper main universe\" >> /etc/apt/sources.list"
wget #(optional)
sudo apt-key add kczessi.gpg && rm kczessi.gpg #(optional)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libtunepimp2c2a libtunepimp2-dev
I also got this message when I added the amaroK repository:
http://kubuntu.org/packages/amarok-143/ ... ackages.gz: 404 Not Found  W: GPG error: http://kubuntu.org dapper Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A506E6D4DD4D5088

I made sure to add the wget for the pgp key....

I'm out of ideas....help?

Also, amarok and amarok-xine were updates I did after I did everything in the list, to no avail...
Also, xmms plays mp3s fine, if I didn't mention...

I guess you are using the xine engine.
Is xine playing mp3s?
Is there any output that can give a hint if you start amarok in a console?

Thank you so much for responding, Marcel.  My initial post might make me look a bit more technically inclined than I really am. I'm a simple ex-Winders user.  I also looked on the forums and did not find instructions for what I am about to ask (I try to figure it out first before asking).

How do I start xine independently from amaroK?
How do I start amaroK from (K)onsole?

Again, sorry for my inexperience.

just type 'amarok' into Konsole and press enter.

There is a program called 'xine-ui' that you could use to test Xine. Its pretty likely that it just won't work either.

As a "winders" user you have a very confusing setup. I would suggest picking MEPIS or Kubuntu and sticking with it.

Okay, I started amaroK from Konsole and got the following,
Also, I really AM confused now, because I AM using Mepis 6.0!
I downloaded xine-ui and started xine.  I had to change the user experience level to see what codecs were in use.
Under the codecs tab the paths are /usr/lib/win32 and usr/lib/codecs, although there is no usr/lib/codecs folder.
I then checked synaptic to see if liblame0 was installed and found it was under the usr/lib folder (there are two links there and libmp3lame0.0.0)
also, xine did not play the file, no suitable demuxer...
