I am using Xandros Home Edition Premium 4. I was previously using Xandros OC 3 and Amarok 1.3. That version of Amarok worked perfectly. When I upgraded to version 4 of Xandros Linux, it installed Amarok 1.4.3 (which it called "Music Manager"). That was working pretty much okay for a long time, but sometimes I thought it was not working as well as 1.3, and then the other day it stopped working completely, after I attached my iRiver T30 mp3 player to download some music onto it. I had previously connected the mp3 player to my pc and used Amarok to download tracks onto it. However, this time the program just died and would not start again. All I was getting was the "Music Manager" splash screen and then nothing.
Up popped an email window, for me to report the bug, which was being sent to amarok-backtraces@lists.sf.net, but all I got was an email back saying: "This message was created automatically by mail delivery software. A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. The following addresses failed: So what good is that, that the program has a means of reporting bugs, but the means to report the bug is a bug as the email address does not work. Anyway, here is what was sent: (I am hoping that Amarok developers will read this as the email to them failed) Amarok has crashed! We are terribly sorry about this But, all is not lost! You could potentially help us fix the crash. Information describing the crash is below, so just click send, or if you have time, write a brief description of how the crash happened first. Many thanks. Just trying to open the program, now it will not open. All I see is the splash screen and then it dies. When it was working I attached my mp3 player (IRiver T30) to my PC, which has worked okay before in Amarok. But this time it would not list the files on the player, so I closed the program and tried to re-open it. It has not opened again since. I have rebooted the PC twice to try to get it to work, but it still will not work. The information below is to help the developers identify the problem, please do not modify it. ======== DEBUG INFORMATION ======= Version: 1.4.3 Engine: xine-engine Build date: Nov 2 2006 CC version: 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13) KDElibs: 3.4.2 Qt: 3.3.4 TagLib: 1.4.0 CPU count: 1 NDEBUG: true ==== file /usr/lib/amarok/amarokapp ======= /usr/lib/amarok/amarokapp: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped ==== (gdb) bt ===================== Using host libthread_db library "/lib/tls/libthread_db.so.1". `system-supplied DSO at 0xb7f6a000' has disappeared; keeping its symbols. At first it worked and played a tune from my collection (it recognised all settings from the previous installation) and it seemed okay, until I clicked on the button to skip to the next track, at which point the program froze and nothing happened. I forcefully killed the application with the Performance Monitor and restarted Amarok. Again it could play a song until I tried to move to the next one, or until it came to the end of a tune and went on to the next one. It either froze or crashed each time. And one time it came up with an automated email to send to the developers, to the same address as before, and guess what, the email address still bounces!! Wow, don't you just love developers who put invalid email addresses into their software? So, here is the second email that was sent: Amarok has crashed! I should add, that I tried using Amarok again, but this time switching off crossfading, and now it seems to not crash or freeze.
So is there a known problem with crossfading causing it to crash? Also, as I am using KDE 3.4.2 in this version of Xandros 4 (with no upgrade to later KDE directly available via Xandros's own package updater/installer), I cannot submit the bug via bugs.kde.org.

Update: now Amarok is back to crashing again after playing only 1 track. I do not have crossfading set, so why does it still crash?
Can anyone recommend a fix for this? Or else a good alternative to Amaraok as I cannot get it to work properly? (which is a real shame, as it is the best music player I have ever used, far superior to Windows Media Player). |

The backtrace shows that the crash is related to your X-Server. It happens while painting the Graphical Analyzer. That's definitely not normal.
As a workaround you could disable the Analyzers (click on it until it says "No Analyzer").

Where do I click to disable the Analyzers? |

Heh, click *on* the Analyzer

I think I found the Analyser section (at the bottom below the playlist, right?), and clicked on it so that nothing was showing there. But the problem remains, in fact it now seems worse, as just playing a track sometimes makes it crash.

ACtually it seems that having something playing there, some kind of visualisation, makes it work okay now, at least for the time being...

Also note that Amarok 1.4.3 is quite outdated (an incredible amount of changes happened between 1.4.3 and 1.4.5), and that Xandros has a habit of customizing software. We won't take any responsibility for their packages

I removed the 1.4.3 Xandros version, and installed 1.4.4 from the Amarok site. If there is a 1.4.5 version, I shall look at installing that.
Thanks for your help so far. |

I installed the latest Amarok, version 1.4.5, but the problem still remains. Sometimes it will play okay and at other times it just crashes when fast forwarding or changing the crossfade settings.
