A few problems with ipod transfers

Fri Feb 23, 2007 12:08 am
Hey All,

I have been having a few problems with transferring music to my iPod nano through amarok and I was wondering in anyone has some suggestions on how to improve my situation.

First, the album art used to work for me but no longer does. I recently reformatted my ipod to hfs+ so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. (I crashed my ipod and I only have a mac to fix it. That's why hfs+)

Second, when I queue up to many albums the transfer speed is initially very fast and then gradually degrades to turtle pace.

And last, when I do queue one album at a time the transfer is very quick. After it says 100% done the text "Flushing iPod filesystem transfer cache" appears and holds there for much longer that it took for the actual transfer.

Here are some system stats for more info:
kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.18-gentoo-r4 (with ehci_hcd for usb 2.0)
ipod nano formated with hfs+ and firmware 1.3
amarok-1.4.5-r1
libgpod-0.4.2

Any help is appreciated.

It appears that there is a problem in amarok 1.4.5 wrt setting the ipod model. Thankfully, ?smail Dönmez has fixed that in current svn. This should be the reason for your artwork not showing up on your ipod.

Wrt "cache flushing" there is nothing we can do: that's just the os and your ipod/usb being slow (libgpod issues a sync() when writing the itunes db in order to make sure the data actually makes it to your ipod).

Your 2nd issue might be related to 'cache flushing': at some point, too much data is outstanding to be written to your ipod (e.g. your RAM is filled with dirty buffers). Then your os actually does the i/o and transfer speed degrades to the speed of i/o your ipod/usb can handle.
