When I launch Amarok, I get a little gray box that says, "building database", which disappears after a second or two and Amarok then fails to launch. Someone told me there was a folder that I can remove to get it working again, but they weren't sure what it was. I'm not at all concerned with losing rating/stats or anything like that. Thanks in advance.

That looks suspicious. Maybe you should try to move/rename/delete (make a backup first!) the file (/home/alex/.kde/share/config/amarokrc) and restart Amarok. Good luck!
