Today I set up the stock Kubuntu 6.10 (AMD64) package of Amarok 1.4.3, with Xine as engine, for the purpose of playing and scrobbling CDs. My problem is that I can't get the program to retrieve album data from FreeDB. No files appear in the CDDB cache directory. Everything is at default settings both in Amarok's own config and ~/.xine/config.

The CD ripper tool Grip is communicating fine with FreeDB on all the discs I've been trying to play, which rules out problems with the server or the discs.

Is this a known issue? How can I troubleshoot this?

1.4.3 is old and buggy, if possible try to upgrade to 1.4.5 (backport).
