basic mySQL inquiry - help!

Mon Sep 10, 2007 7:42 pm
would this work?

I know that with an XML file (which is a very simple database), I can transport it like any other file, I can put it on a drive, on a CDROM, or eMail it to someone.

Is it possible to do that with a mySQL?  When I work on it in terminal, it seems to be invisible and none existent, but these commands must be producing a tangible file of some kind.

if  there's anyway I can get someone who knows what they're doing to compile an Amarok-mySQL database file for me, and send it to me (letting me know the password), I could conceivably work with it.  I would have to completely reconstruct all the data in it, but the backbone, the file structure itself (and the password) is all that I need, since I keep failing at doing that myself.

Anyhow, just an idea - probably a dumb one, but I thought that I'd give it a shot...

thanks again,

What happened when you followed the Amarok wiki page? That gives step-by-step instructions on exactly what you need to type to initialise the database - at least it's what I follow and it always works for me! I'm assuming your mysqld is running, or you wouldn't be able to connect to it at all...

I did notice though, that another user had problems with amarok filling a mysql database as well.

I don't think mysql databases are terribly portable - you might have to export/import stuff, but I'm no expert there.

thanks -

I could show you some of the various terminal sessions, which I saved (for just such an occasion).

main problem seems to be that although I believe I have created an amarok database, I can't seem to figure out what the password it wants is -

or perhaps that's not right, since I can't seem to create a new DB with a working password either.

essentially, terminal is just too tough for someone who doesn't know what they're doing!

I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but maybe chalk it up as learning more familiarity, but there is a browser based interface for mysql called phpmyadmin.  If you could get this running, database administration is a breeze.  Do you know someone that could help you set that up?

oh thank you - I want to hear anything that could be potentially helpful - lately my entire focus (in life!) has been trying to get Amarok going - with mySQL running - to manage my mega, mega, mega library of music (somewhere nearing 3 TB).

will definitely look into phpmyadmin - it works off a web browser like firefox?

thank you - I don't know if I can get it going, but will try, will keep posting and looking for help in the forums.  Am committed to this project!

phpMyAdmin basically interacts with the user like any other web app like last.fm, youtube, facebook, etc.  You do everything in the browser, be it firefox, konq, safari, whatever your personal choice is.  If your using ubuntu, installing it should also install everything you need, and I am sure they have something in their wiki for getting it going.

Here are a few screenshots of phpMyAdmin browsing the amarok database on my box.

1) browsing the database
2) adjusting the database permissions for the amarok user
3) Setting up a new user

downloaded it and extracted it, now it's sitting on my desktop, but there doesn't seem to be an easy way to install it - the terminal can't find it..

the wiki tells me to go into terminal and type

will@will-linux:~$ cd phpMyAdmin

but then I get this

bash: cd: phpMyAdmin: No such file or directory

which makes me think I should have put the PHPmyadmin folder someplace other than my desktop - or should I?  any suggestions?  Do I put the folder in my internal file system?  How do I do that?

thanks!

Will

PS: apologies for my vast ignorance & inexperience!

I can't do it now, but I'd be willing to get on irc with you and walk you through it,  or before doing that, let me see if I can find a good set of instructions that already exists.  If your up for it, we'll get this running for you, and you'll learn a lot on the way ;)

You need to follow these instructions

http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu_debian_lamp_server

I'll check back later to see how you made out.

thank you so much ...

I really am committed to it - mainly because I don't have a choice!  As far as I know, Amarok (with MySQL) is the only software out there that exists that can handle my enormous, oceanic, mega-library.  So I gotta pursue it as far as I can.

will try the steps you recommend and report back to you!

I think that the problem is that I am just a YUTZ!  Somehow I just can't do terminal!  Every time I try something with the terminal, it comes out wrong.  (This is a terminal illness!)

I tried just the first, simplest command, the first in the instructions that you gave me, and this is what happened:

will@will-linux:~$ apt-get install update
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
will@will-linux:~$

maybe an IRC session would help - nothing could hurt at this point!

Like I say, I will press forward, because the Linux / Amarok / mySQL combination is my only possible chance of being able to manage my music collection.  (I sincerely doubt that I will ever be able to do it with iTunes and its meager XML foundation...)

thanks again!

You forgot sudo.  You need root priviledges to install packages

sudo apt-get install update
sudo apt-get install

Although, it looks like that tutorial assumes you are in a root console.  You can either 'sudo su' to achieve that, and then type each command as they say, or just prepend each command with the sudo command

sudo basically allow a normal user to run a program that requires root priviledge.  Also, see the second user comment at the bottom of that tutorial.
