Amarok 1.4.4 doesn't play mp3 (already looked for other guides) on Debian Sid
Sat Oct 20, 2007 8:53 pm
Hi,
I've installed Amarok 1.4.7 on my Debian Sid, but it didn't play mp3s. I googled and I found some guides that told me to install libxine1-ffmpeg (previously libxine-extracodecs), but I already had it on. I found then that version 1.4.7 was unstable so I removed it and installed version 1.4.4 but it still doesn't work. I remeber that on ubuntu Amarok just crashed while trying to play a mp3 but then asked with a popup if I wanted to install the mp3 support and so it worked. But on Debian i didn't recieve any popup. How to make it works? thanks I'm not english, so if i made any mistake, forgive me ![]() edit: I also found this: /usr/lib/amarok/install-mp3 but it doesn't work since in my /amarok directory there's nothing and this: $mkdir ~/.xine/plugins/ $cp -r /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.1.4/ ~/.xine/plugins/ doesn't work either. (I had 1.1.8 instead of 1.1.4) also tried: apt-get remove --purge amarok and then reinstalled it but it didn't purged anything! the configuration of the newly installed amarok (1.4.7) was the one I had before, and the xine-engines keeps saying that it cannot play mp3s. i use alsa, and i tried oss but didn't work. any suggestions? again i ask: why on ubuntu i could install the mp3 support by clicking yes on a popup and now on sid i don't get that popup? edit2: this is what i meant: In case your distribution has to ship multimedia backends without MP3 support (for example due to patent issues) you can add a script to install the needed packages to enable MP3 support. For xine you can enable this feature by: * adding src/engine/xine/amarok_xine-mp3_install.desktop to it's directories Makefile.am * edit the Exec argument of the desktop file to how the script to install MP3 support should be executed. If amarok_xine-mp3_install.desktop is installed Amarok will show a pop-up telling the user that MP3 support is missing, and that he can install it by just clicking a button (which will execute the exec agrument), as soon as he tries to play a MP3 file. how to make this work on my amarok?

I tried many things before I got Amarok to play mp3. Basically I used Adept Program manager in Kde to install the following:
(1) xine - all packages (2) kdemultimedia-kfile-plugin (I'm using kde not Gnome) (3)lame (4)lame-extras (5)libk3b2-mp3 (6)libgmp3c2 (7)liblame-dev (8)liblame0 (9)xmms-mad (and any other "mad" files you can find. They have something to do with MP3s. (10)amarok-xine (11)kaffeine-xine (12)libxine1 (13)libxine1-ffmpeg (14)libxine1-kde (15)libxinerama1 Some of these packages installed by themselves because they were dependents of other packages. I listed all the ones I could think of. I hope this helps you. M |

Also, read the requirements for Amarok as posted in the Wiki:
http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Requirements Very helpful items here. Tells you everything you need to install and why you need to install it. Mandatory reading! M |

I wish I could help you further but I am a noob on Linux and feel fortunate to have gotten mine to work in the first place.
Good Luck. God Bless. M |

well, i really thank you anyway. i discovered that, by now, there's no solution since it's a problem of debian sid. hope they fix it soon.
thanks again. |
