M4a playback requires AAC support, in whatever package management utility your distribution provides search for:

aac

: if that doesn't get a result try some of the following:

faad
libfaad
faac
libfaac
libmp4

: could be other relevant names but at least for Debian and Ubuntu, if they are not provided by your distribution vendor you might need to find another source. In Debian for example, I'm not sure these are official Debian packages, so you might have to edit /etc/apt/sources.list and add:

deb ftp://gulus.usherbrooke.ca/debian-multimedia/ stable main

: or:

deb http://ftp.gnome.org/mirror/debian-multimedia/ etch main

mirror list

If you post the distribution and release you are using someone could give you more distribution specific help.
