Won't play older VBR files (redux)

Wed Feb 13, 2008 9:20 am
Reference old topic:  http://amarok.kde.org/forum/index.php/topic,13032.0.html

I am having the same problem as the referenced topic.  (the forum software suggested I start a new topic since the old one is....old.)

I can play an older VBR file in XMMS, Rythmbox, and on my audio player (iAudio X5L running Rockbox).  It will not play in Amarok.  I can load an album into the playlist, press play, and every song essentially gets skipped over in rapid succession without error messages or any of the songs actually playing.  Newer ripped files play fine (also OGG VBR).  I tried the following:
1) oggz-validate -- no errors reported.
2) oggzinfo for one track -- (oggzinfo -a *Fall*):
Code: Select all
Content-Duration: 00:02:03.400
Content-Length: 2.514 MB
Content-Bitrate-Average: 170.884 kbps

Vorbis: serialno 0000001500
        5625 packets in 619 pages, 9.1 packets/page
        Content-Length: 2.514 MB
        Content-Bitrate-Average: 170.884 kbps
        Audio-Samplerate: 44100 Hz
        Audio-Channels: 2
        Page-Length-Maximum: 4.300 kB
        Page-Length-StdDev: 0 bytes
        Packet-Length-Maximum: 8.150 kB
        Packet-Length-StdDev: 0 bytes

3) ogginfo :
Code: Select all
Processing file "01 - The Police - Fallout.ogg"...

New logical stream (#1, serial: 000005dc): type vorbis
Vorbis headers parsed for stream 1, information follows...
Version: 0
Vendor: Xiphophorus libVorbis I 20000508 (1.0 beta 1 or beta 2)
Channels: 2
Rate: 44100

Nominal bitrate not set
Upper bitrate not set
Lower bitrate not set
User comments section follows...
        ALBUM=Message in a Box: The Complete Recordings (disc 1)
        ARTIST=The Police
        DATE=1993
        DESCRIPTION=
        DISCNUMBER=1
        GENRE=Rock
        TITLE=Fallout
        TRACKNUMBER=1
Vorbis stream 1:
        Total data length: 2627173 bytes
        Playback length: 2m:03.400s
        Average bitrate: 170.319157 kb/s
Logical stream 1 ended

I then repeated the same for a track that Amarok can play:
1) oggz-valide -- No errors reported
2) oggzinfo -a
Code: Select all
Content-Duration: 00:04:58.466
Content-Length: 5.877 MB
Content-Bitrate-Average: 165.166 kbps

Vorbis: serialno 1399346390
        18783 packets in 1450 pages, 13.0 packets/page
        Content-Length: 5.877 MB
        Content-Bitrate-Average: 165.166 kbps
        Audio-Samplerate: 44100 Hz
        Audio-Channels: 2
        Page-Length-Maximum: 4.297 kB
        Page-Length-StdDev: 0 bytes
        Packet-Length-Maximum: 3.597 kB
        Packet-Length-StdDev: 0 bytes

3) ogginfo
Code: Select all
Processing file "Air - 02 -  Sexy Boy.ogg"...

New logical stream (#1, serial: 536854d6): type vorbis
Vorbis headers parsed for stream 1, information follows...
Version: 0
Vendor: Xiph.Org libVorbis I 20070622
Channels: 2
Rate: 44100

Nominal bitrate: 192.000000 kb/s
Upper bitrate not set
Lower bitrate not set
User comments section follows...
        ARTIST=Air
        ALBUM=Moon Safari
        TITLE=Sexy Boy
        GENRE=Electronic
        TRACKNUMBER=2
Vorbis stream 1:
        Total data length: 6158166 bytes
        Playback length: 4m:58.466s
        Average bitrate: 165.061407 kb/s
Logical stream 1 ended

The only interesting thing I see in the outputs is that there is no nominal bit rate reported for ogginfo for the bad file while there is one listed for the good file.

Unfortunately, I had about a dozen CDs stolen from my car, the Police boxed set being a portion of them, so I can't rerip them.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.  I tried to find a way to rebuild the bad files to be acceptable to Amarok/xine but I couldn't find any command line tools to do so.  I don't want to convert between formats (OGG->MP3->OGG) due to quality loss.  Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Rob
