Amarok not detecting iPod

Thu May 01, 2008 11:49 pm
Okay, I'm a noob, I'll admit. I searched the forums and couldn't find quite what I'm looking for, but if I missed it, I apologize profusely :(

I recently installed Rockbox on my iPod for the sake of playing FLAC files. Now, before this, I never connected my iPod with Linux running. I've been simply trying out the newest Ubuntu release since a little before the official release, and so far, I'm liking it. A few minor problems here and there, but they're just that - minor. I'll live. So, thinking I'm about ready to stick with it for good, I decided it was time to connect my iPod, update my collection on it, and...well, recharge the battery. Aaaand there's where I ran into a problem that I can't really live with.

http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/Media_Device ... ith_Amarok - I followed those instruction, aaaand...well, didn't get very far. Amarok simply isn't detecting my iPod. Now, my computer itself it. It's mounted, and Rythmbox automatically opens up with it as soon as I plug it in. But, I can't get Amarok to do a damn thing with it.

And I'll be honest. So far? Yeah, I'm lovin' Amarok. I understand the hype now x) So it sucks I'm having a problem with it. Any help would be much appreciated, pretty pleeeease. I apologize again if this is already answered somewhere >_<

What kind of ipod? Which version of Amarok and libgpod? Which linux distribution and version? This might help us to help you.

Thanks! 5th gen 30G video iPod, Amarok 1.4.9.1, Ubuntu Hardy Heron, aaaand I'll be totally honest in saying I don't know how to check the libgpod. Bear with me, and thanks again x)

You could find out your version of libgpod with the commands
'dpkg -l | grep libgpod'. But on hardy heron you are at 0.6.0. Your software is certainly new enough to support your ipod.

I suppose that your problems are due to the fact that your ipod does not get mounted automatically, i.e. its tree of directories/files does not get integretated into your system's file hierarchy. What does happen when you plug in your iPod? What's the output of 'mount'? Does it help if you go to Amarok's setting dialog/media devices and press 'auto detect' there? Could you try something like 'sudo mount /dev/sdb3 /mnt' and connecting to your ipod afterwards? Ah, btw, are you using a gnome or a kde environment?

Ah, thank you! I'll keep that one in mind :)

It is mounting, as far as I can tell at least. When I plug it in, an icon for it shows up on my desktop, and Rythmbox automatically opens up with it. I went into Amarok's settings for media devices and clicked auto detect aaaand I get this:

"No new media devices were found. If you feel this is an error, ensure that the DBUS and HAL daemons are running and KDE was built with support for them. You can test this by running "dcop kded mediamanager fullList" in a Konsole window."

And nothing seemed to happen when I typed the 'sudo mount etc.' bit and then plugged it in, aside from Rythmbox opening as usual. And, I'm using Gnome.

This is all so confusing for me ;_; lol.

Hate to be a pain and bump this, but...anybody? I appreciate the feedback I've gotten so far, but I'm still a tad...clueless, unfortunately.

But, I can't get Amarok to do a damn thing with it.

So just to clarify, if you go:

Settings
  -> Configure Amarok
          -> Media Devices

Do you see anything listed at the top of the screen?

I have:

Name:  sdd1  (Details)  Plugin: Apple iPod Media Device

Perhaps is something as simple as Amarok hasn't detected the correct device type, though I'm guessing you've probably tried this.

Mhm, nothing :\ I even just tried it with another iPod, untouched by RockBox. Absolutely nothing comes up, but RythmBox opens it automatically on plug in.

Hi what happened to this question? I have the EXACT same problem here right now! it works fine with rythmbox, but amarok just cant find it.
So ailurus, did you manage to solve it? Will you please tell me how then?
Or maybe someone's got something new to say about this? :-)

Never got it solved, nope :\ Glad it's not just me, though. I'm not completely crazy/stupid, then.

I had a similar problem with (I thought) Amarok and my music player, which happens to be a Trekstor Vibez. After numerous tests, I tried a different USB cord, and, SUCCESS! The cord which came with the Trekstor evidently had a broken wire inside, or something.

Worth trying, anyway.

Good luck,

Valorie

Hm. Y'know, I might have spare USB cord for my iPod laying aruond...somewhere. I guess it's worth a try. I'll try and look for it :P

Though, question. You say the cord was broken. Did you try it with anything else, though? 'Cause, as stated, my iPod still works with Rythmbox, so I AM a little skeptical about the cord thing...

Check out https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/186384 which may have the answer you're looking for. In particular, make sure you have the latest version of Amarok and have installed kdebase-kio-plugins (see the bottom of the Launchpad thread).

Hope this helps ... sorry if it's irrelevant - I didn't read your previous posts too thoroughly, but just recognized that I had a similar problem.

Are you using KDE4 by any chance?

If so, this thread from the Fedora forum might be relevant.

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=193092

I upgraded my Fedora Core 7 to Core 9 (which uses KDE4) and had the issue described above.  Reverting to Core 8 (and KDE3) got things working again although, from the thread, it seems there might have been other solutions.

Good Luck
