I'm using the latest version of Amarok (1.4.9.1) that I compiled myself with all the configure flags I need to use it with iPods.
Everything works beatifully, even on-the-fly transcoding with fftrans... Except:
when I view the track listing on my iPod, tracks with a leading "the" are shown with the other "T" tracks but under their own category of the letter after the "the."  like this:

Tell Me Baby
Z_________
The Zephyr Song
T_________
This is a Place
This Velvet Glove

Is an actual section on my iPod.  Any idea why it sorts it wrong but categorizes it under Z?
