Hello!
ATM i am using Amarok-1.4.10 with KDE-3.5.9 with the following Gentoo USE flags and a 2.6.25er Kernel:
My problem is that sometimes my whole collection is "forgotten" by Amarok. There' s just nothing there. After a rescan it' s all working again but that' s a little bit time consuming thing to do. Note that i am not using mysql or any other external database. So what could i do? Is switching to mysql recommended? Normally i like the minimalistic approach so i wouldn' t like that. Any help would be recommended. |

ARGHHHHHHHHHH -- Amarok opens with NO files, nothing. Just empty. Except -- if I go to my saved playlists, there are all the songs, and ratings. And they play. But under the collection tab -- nothing. And when I say to rescan, nothing happens. Now I'm presented with the screen which says (Context > Music): Hello Amarok user!
This is the Context Browser: it shows you contextual information about the currently playing track. In order to use this feature of Amarok, you need to build a Collection. Build Collection... I'm afraid if I do this, I'll lose all my ratings. And no, I don't have a backup. Why isn't there a choice somewhere to MAKE a backup? I did some updates to Hardy Heron Kubuntu -- but Amarok wasn't mentioned. Using Amarok 1.4.9.1, KDE 3.5.9. So freaky to be playing music just like usual, but have NO COLLECTION! Under Tools, statistics -- first it reported zero under everything, now it says - you must have a collection to have statistics (it wouldn't allow me to copy/paste the error message). I'm freaked out --what shall I do? |

Same here... i help myself by saving a playlist with all my rated songs (the stars not points). Rebuilding the collection should not destroy the ratings (it does not here), but it' s really annoying to rebuild the collection EVERY day, even with a core2quad. Most confusing: there' s no real scheme when it' s working and when not... It does not happen after each reboot. I even checked the permissons of the amarok-folder, did not solve it... |

Both of you, is your music collection on a removable or networked hard drive? Is the drive mounted in the same place every time you start amarok?

It' s on my local hard drive under /home/pathto/mp3.
It' s been there for ages (working), just stopped suddenly. |

Local hard drive. Nothing has changed since yesterday except the 4 recommended updates.

well... perhaps one of those four recommended updates caused the problem. Did one of them happen to be udev or anything silly like that?

Well, i am using these versions (with use flags, the - indicates that function is not in use)

I can't recall whether udev was one of the updates or not, and I've discovered it is difficult to get a list of updates anywhere!
In any case, a day or two later, Amarok started rebuilding my database without prompting, and the ratings did NOT disappear. So all is well, but I'm still feeling weird about it happening -- because I don't know the cause. I still suggest building the backup function into Amarok itself. Not of the collection -- even a n00b like myself can do that. But all of the various other stuff such as ratings, settings, statistics, which make Amarok so fun to use. |
