Strange tag behavior

Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:22 pm
I'm getting some strange mp3 tag behavior in amarok. I'll see if I can explain it clearly.

A number of mp3's aren't displaying properly, but I'll use a specific example to try and explain my problem. I have file named TrackNumber-Trackname.mp3. (for example 02-example.mp3)  Amarok is correctly displaying the track name in the "Title" column. However, it's displaying the track number in the "Artist" column, and not displaying anything in the "Album" or "Genre" Column. I was curious about the tags, so I tried looking at them in a number of different ways. They are described below:

First was using the program "Tag and Rename" (T&R). I'm running T&R on a windows machine and connecting to my music collection over Samba. In T&R, all the tags appear to be correct except the Genre tag, which shows as "7".

Second, I tried looking at the tags in Windows Explorer (again, over Samba). The tags appear to be displaying correctly (including the Genre tag) in WE, except the "Artist" tag isn't displaying anything at all.

Then, I opened the tags in iTunes, all but two tags showed properly. The "Album Artist" tag is displaying only boxes, and the "Name" tag is displaying the name of the song, but preceded by the artist. For example, "artist-songtitle"

In EasyTAG, everthing appears to be displaying properly.

So, there you have it. I tried looking at the tags in five different programs, and I got different results in all of them.  I'm wondering if it has to do with how the tags were encoded. I thought I remember reading something about that on these forums, and how to flush the tag cache, but I can't seem to find that post. I've tried rescanning my music collection, but that didn't help.

As a side note, I have a relatively large mp3 collection, and haven't had this issue before. The files I'm having trouble with were only recently added and I didn't rip them myself.

any help is much appreciated.

Thanks Community!

probably just a tag versioning issue - try retagging and saving all tracks with one player of your choice, and they should show up uniformly everywhere.
