So, for the purposes of hopefully helping anyone who comes across this problem... I will post my solution... Mind you, it's not a very elegant solution - but, hell, it works...

So, basically... I installed the amarok packages on top of the compiled build I was having problems with. For whatever reason this seemed to kickstart the database into working. I was able to build the database, of course this caused other consequences... SO, I de-installed the packages and re-compiled amarok. Everything now works...

Like I said, not very elegant... I think in my attempt at playing around with this I had the compiled version and the packages installed at the same time. Which broke other functionality, like being able to write to M4A files... but the database worked. Although, at this point I have done a complete removal of the Amarok packages and recompiled the 1.4.10 - and it all works...

I have no clue... time for a beer and some beats...

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid, MySQL version 5.0.67 and a fresh build of Amarok 1.4.10. Basically, it's exactly as the subject states. MySQL is enabled, databases are built and accessible - Amarok doesn't build the collection. I don't get a status at the bottom of the screen that says it's attempting to build it either... nothing. Rescan, Update neither produce any results. I started Amarok from CLI and that also produces no output regarding errors or anything for that matter.

I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do next. I remember having this issue the last time I built Amarok which was 1.4.9 on a Debian Lenny variant - I can not for the life of me remember how I got it working... Although today, I did come across this post :

https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubun ... 18417.html

It seems to be the exact same problem, however our circumstances are different and the fix doesn't apply on my system.

Things I have tried...

Creating databases, new users, proper permissions: even tried accessing the database through Amarok with the root log in, just to make sure.
Tried using PostGresSQL and SQLite - both of which have the same problem - no database...

Which makes me think that the MySQL database is not the issue here. I have double checked the database backend and it is working as it should...

Im just at a complete loss. If I could get Amarok 2 working I would do that as well, however I had similar problems with that one... The package doesn't seem to want to play my .m4a files. It will play them, if I force it through Add Media but won't load them into the playlist. I tried building the SVN but it returned error 2 - something about MySQL, google directed me to this forum where it was reported that there is a problem with the MySQL package and I'd have to compile my own... and I'm just not in the mood anymore. I'm about to scrap this project and just start using Audacity again...
