Hi there,
I'm attempting to install Amarok after stupidly uninstalling it to try and get the iPod configure to work - but I can't work out how to install it. I don't mind what version I have as long as I can sync my ipod in it! A step by step guide is what I need, I'm a new linux user (am on Mepis). And by step by step, I mean really basic ![]() Thanks! ![]() |

When I try apt-get install amarok my terminal comes up with the following message:
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root? What should I do? |

use the 'sudo' command...
sudo apt-get install 'whatever' sudo refers to su - which stands for switch user, in this case 'sudo' means switch-user do - and with no user specified it implies root. Some people will argue it means super-user, but I would disagree... all you need to understand is that utilizing sudo as above will be like temporarily becoming an administrator... Now... as for amarok... I would take the time to compile the program from source, not only will you learn quite a bit... but it will work the way you want it. For instance, the amarok being installed from synaptic will not edit AAC (m4a) files - I am not absolutely sure why, but I think it has to do with the restrictive licensing around the AAC codec... So, that is something you will have to build / compile in on your own... yes, it can be a _total_ pain in the ****... but in the end it's worth it. |

"Sorry, user sueking is not allowed to execute '/usr/bin/apt-get install amarok' as root on SueK."
That's the message I get when I try use sudo. DAGNABIT! |

that almost sounds like you don't have administrative access to the machine... which is necessary especially for installs and the like.
I'm sorry, I'd look into it more but I have to travel and work this week. Hopefully someone else can chime in... |
