Smart playlists not working when using a remote mySQL server

I have been using Amarok 1.4.10 with mySQL for some time, successfully.

I have recently bought a QNAP NAS, which means I can run mySQL on the NAS rather than on the same machine as Amarok.  Why would I want to do that?  That way, I can access the same database easily from more than one Linux PC - multiple copies of Amarok against one music collection.

I've successfully migrated my existing database to the new server, and Amarok finds my collection just fine.  All the entries are there, along with play counts, ratings, etc.

However... Smart Playlists are no longer working.  Whenever I try to use one, I get a blank list.

I have rescanned the collection, and that works fine.

I have tested the remote mySQL and I can successfully reach my remote Amarok database from the command line - so I think it is running correctly, by the way.

Anyone got any thoughts?
