VBR tracks issue...

Wed Nov 12, 2008 11:30 pm
Hi!

I recently filed the following bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=174833

I was told to switch to the xine engine but I can't seem to find any way of doing so. I'm using Kubuntu 8.10 and my main system backend is xine but I'm not sure if Amarok is using it. Is there a way to tell what backend it's using as this problem is pretty bad in some cases.

Thanks! =)

sudo apt-get install amarok-xine

then start Amarok, Settings > Configure Amarok > Engines

select xine

et voila!

If xine is already installed/used, and you're using crossfading, then the problem might be with dmixing - if you're running off an onboard audio device, then you probably don't have hardware mixing support. This could cause the second audio stream which is being mixed to simply be ignored until the first one finishes. Try googling on setting up dmix for ubuntu, it shouldn't be too difficult nowadays.

Ah, sorry, didn't realise you said Amarok 2 beta 3 on the report.

You'll have to install the phonon xine backend, find the package using apt-cache search phonon | grep xine. It should be phonon-backend-xine or somthing similar.

Then you need to switch to xine using phonon's configuration. There's currently no way of doing this if you do not have KDE4 installed. You can use the 'System Settings' app, or run: kcmshell4 kcm_phonon.

Thanks very much for your assistance, Seb!

I am running KDE4 (Kubuntu 8.10) and my system is using the xine backend already. I tried running a few of the .mp3 files through Banshee (in a GNOME environment) and they worked without a hitch but I think it was using GStreamer as it's backend in Ubuntu 8.10. My hardware is also a SB Audigy 2 ZS so it's not onboard sound.
