kernel panic ubuntu64

Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:04 pm
I have been getting kernel panics with amarok 1.4.9.1 in ubuntu 64 bit (gnome desktop).  Every thing is frozen, can't move the mouse, flashing caps lock key.  It is a big pain in the butt.  The engine is xine.
Qt: 3.3.8b
KDE: 3.5.10
Amarok: 1.4.9.1

I can assure you that the kernel panic cannot possibly be a problem of Amarok. Something else in your system (possibly a driver) must be defective.

I don't get kernel panics when amarok isn't playing.  If you are right then how do you explain the fact that the stopped when amarok was uninstalled.  I have reinstalled amarok and am willing to get my computer crashed again, when it happens what would be helpful info?  Maybe amarok it's self isn't the cause but software that allows kde programs to run in gnome.  I would like to get to the bottom of this.  I enjoyed using amarok and have had to make do with audacious because of this issue.  I would appreciate not being blown off.

You haven't been blown off - kernel panics are generally a hardware issue. Could be that the xine engine uses your hardware in a different way to audacious. Could be your video driver doesn't like opengl and you're trying to use an opengl analyser. Could be you're trying to use visualisations that don't like your system.
Try compiling Amarok yourself and disabling opengl, visualisations, and any media devices you don't use.
Make sure you're using latest versions of everything. Pretty much the standard trouble-shooting stuff.

I can no longer reproduce the bug, what ever had been causing it must have been updated.  Thank you all who replied, and sorry about giving Mark a hard time, I just hate the buck passing and that is what I thought he was doing.
