I have a 5th gen iPod, which used to work.  I have been trying to fix in various Windows machines and they have all crashed multiple times and magically gotten better when I unplugged the iPod.
The iPod did not show up in iTunes in any machine, but it showed up in My Computer.
I am currently in Ubuntu (Heron) because it doesn't crash Linux, and because it is normally what I use.  I have Amarok 4.1 and have never used it, but tried to today because of the problems in Windows.
If I go to Places I can find it, but it will not show up in Amarok.
Can you help?

you have to install the packet "libgpod" via Synaptic or command lin "apt-get install libgpod" first
