Hello I have just recently switch my computer over to the linux system today and am very new to the OS.

So my question is this.

I know my iPod is a mass storage device so I know I can get the songs off of it.
I also know iTunes encrypts the songs on the iPod.
I have Amarok now and am wondering if there is a guide as to how to get the songs off of my iPod and back onto my computer.

If there is a guide for that on this web forum please direct me towards it.

Thanks so much.

Amarok can read the ipod database so will allow you to get songs off your ipod into the amarok music collection (it actually uses gtkpod to do this).

However, first you have to connect your ipod to Amarok.  How you do this may depend on what type of ipod you have (the newer ones sometimes take a few more steps).

I think the steps are:

1)  Connect your ipod to the computer and make sure it's mounted.  You should see an ipod icon on the desktop - on my Fedora system I have to right-click the ipod icon to actually do the mount - other systems may auto mount it.

2)  Start Amarok and in the menus  (Tools / Options / Devices  I think, but I'm working from memory here so I could be wrong) configure your device as an ipod.

3)  Select the Device tab from the tab bar down the left hand side of the screen and towards the top of the screen select your ipod type.

4)  Press "Connect"

If this all worked then the contents of your ipod should appear in the conents of the devices tabbed window and you can right-click them and copy them to your hard disk.

Good Luck
