Amarok 2.0.1.1 + phonon backends + KDE 4.2

Hi

I'll preface this by saying I'm testing out Kubuntu KDE 4.2 experimental packages, so I understand there will be a few bugs.

I'm wondering if anyone using KDE 4.2 RC is experiencing problems with no tracks playing when using the Phonon Xine backend. When Gstreamer is used as the backend, music (OGG) plays ok (although I have no digital output).

When amarok is started from the shell it says something like "Xine attempted to seek beyond the end of the track".

This did occur when running KDE 4.1.3 as well, since Amarok 2.0.1.1 was installed... so I don't think the problem is related to 4.2.

Thanks for any help provided.

james

Hi James,

I have a similar problem here. I'm using openSuse 11.1 + KDE 4.2 RC1 + Amarok 2.0.1.1, and indeed amarok won't play any song with the Xine backend. Switching to GStreamer I get sound, but some weird behavior (I stop the music and amarok stop and start the same music again).
With Xine as backend I get KDE system notifications to play sound, but amarok won't play anything and give this message when I click on the "play" button:

QString::arg: Argument missing: Amarok - No track playing., 0:00

If you use the Xine backend (which we currently recommend), you will have to install the MP3 codec for it, which SUSE does not ship in the distribution (for legal reasons).

Installing it is super simple, just google for it :)

I can confirm this bug...

Kubuntu 8.10, KDE4.2 RC1, Amarok 2.0.1.1, Phonon.

The internet services output sound, not so the mp3s in my local collection...

Hi Mark. thanks for the info. My collection is Ogg format, which the phonon backed for Xine won't play, I haven't tried any mp3's yet. For me the phonon xine backend doesn't play anything.

In KDE System Settings > Multimedia i played around with the various devices, testing sound output for both the Notifications and Music output but nothing is heard when Xine is the preferred backend. I deferred PulseAudio to the bottom of the device list as PA has been removed on my system, it's a SHOC.
... so I don't think the issue here is in Amarok

When gstreamer is the preferred engine, playback for Music (in Amarok as well) and Notifications works. I haven't tried Gstreamer for MP3 yet.

Thanks
James

Same here, gstreamer works, xine doesn't.

Others have this problem as well:

So I just installed the 4.2 final packages on Kubuntu 8.10 and guess what? This bug is STILL not fixed....

Very very disappointing.

I'm pleased to say this looks to be fixed in KDE4.2 / Kubuntu 8.10 - I think it was a buggy/incompatible xine phonon backend.

Packages installed:

$ aptitude show amarok-kde4
Package: amarok-kde4
Version: 2.0.1.1-0ubuntu1~ppa1

Package: phonon-backend-xine
Version: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1

Package: libphonon4
Version: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1

Package: phonon
Version: 4:4.3.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa1

@Vincens:

make sure you have libxine1-ffmpeg installed and that you use indeed the xine backend for Phonon.
The only other explanation would be encrypted mp3s...

Works here very well and always has.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I have libxine1-ffmpeg installed and the only backend for phonon in my computer is xine.
Amarok doesn't work nor .mp3 neither another formats like .wma.

With VLC I can play any music, for example.

Amarok 1 works without problems.

Well that surely isn't normal. Whatever the reason is, it's probably not an Amarok bug, but rather a packaging issue, or a configuration problem. I recommend asking in your distro's forums.

PS: Whether VLC or Amarok 1 work is really irrelevant here. They work very differently.
