Is the gapless playback for mp3 supported in Amarok 2?

Hi,

Many popular players have gapless playback support for mp3. Does Amarok 2 have that support?. I ask because when i play an album like The Dark Side of The Moon, there's a perceptible pause between the tracks.

Greetings!

P.D. I'm starting to learn English, sorry for... you know, any error ;)

Gapless playback is supported by 2.x, but for MP3 the usual restrictions apply (technical limitations of the format). For OGG VORBIS and FLAC and other formats it should work fine.

See more here:

Agree, but some players cached the first seconds of the next mp3 in the playlist, like AIMP or, in some moment, Winamp.

It would terrific if Amarok incorporates this feature, and would make it even cooler. ;)

Amarok does work very differently technically from these players. In contrast to apps like Winamp, we do not do the audio decoding "by ourselves", but rather delegate it to libraries. In Amarok 2, there are two levels of abstraction between "us" and the codec: Phonon, and then xinelib/GStreamer/QuickTime, etc.

So we do not have direct influence on features like these. On the other hand we automatically benefit from improvements in the libraries :)

Well, I don't know why, but even with FLAC, the gappless playback doesn't work for me. I am in Ubuntu Intrepid, with Amarok 2.0.1.1 and KDE 4.1.3 (not native, because I am in Ubuntu - GNOME, you know ;))

If anyone can help...

Thanks and greetings!

Caching the decoded mp3 is what Amarok does essentially. The issue is that with MP3 its hard to know when the track is over. That said it was always good enough for me in 1.4.

I'm not sure about amarok 2 and gapless. I'll try my live Johnny Cash album now. :)

Yeah, well, I found a solution: now I use the xine-backend, rather than gstreamer-backend for Phonon. Now the pause is less perceptible, but still is there. (when you're inspired, it's nothing :))

Gapless doesn't work for me. Neither mp3, nor Vorbis, nor FLAC. Nor anything :P Amarok 2.1 Beta 2, Xine-lib 1.1.16.3.

I think the source of the problems is xine, but I don't know how to replace it with something else.
