No Sound - Amarok 1.4 on KDE 4.1

Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:43 am
I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Intrepid Ibis 8.10, but I'm not getting any sound out of Amarok. Adept shows that I've got amarok-engine-xine installed, and Xine is selected as the engine in Amarok, with Output plugin set to Autodetect.

The Dragon video player is outputting sound, and the System is as well (Kubuntu startup and close sounds).

Any hints?

Install "libxine1-ffmpeg".

"Install "libxine1-ffmpeg""

Yep, it's installed but still no sound. I'm discovering that it's a problem affecting more than just Amarok, as I'm also not getting any sound out of Flash in Firefox, and Mplayer also doesn't output sound.

I'm calling it quits for tonight and I'll do some more googling tomorrow, but if anyone can come up with a suggestion in the meantime, it'd be much appreciated...

Have you tried setting the output plugin to ALSA?

This looks very much like the difficulties I have had with Amarok 2 and an upgrade of KDE 4.
You may want to read through my post -

"I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Intrepid Ibis 8.10"
I did an upgrade of Kubuntu Intrepid Ibis 8.10. There are definitely issues with it. Relevant here is that Kubuntu preference for Pulse should show in no support for previous alsa setup. Since I am interested in Amarok this upgrade I decided to go with pulse and oss. If you want alsa you will have to search on how to ensure properly installed and becomes default at startup. I have done this previously, but am unsure how this will work with current Kubuntu - remember it relies on phonon which wants oss (xine or gstreamer on top of oss) - I believe this to be the wrapper that allows multimedia handling in system settings and discovery of those settings?
I hope above is correct, but I am not positive I grasp the situation, you will need to check veracity in this forum or elsewhere.

Yes, tried this, and no effect. Also tried setting it to oss, (ditto), and pulseaudio, to which I got the message "xine was unable to initialise any audio drivers".

Read through your post. Thanks.

I originally decided to upgrade to Intrepid because I thought I could install KDE4.2 (taskbar autohide - yay...) and also get the added benefit of Amarok2. Well, my attempt to install 4.2 was borked due to dependency issues, and then I discover that Amarok2 wasn't standard.

Well, this newb is accepting his limits. I've decided I'm going to take my bat and ball and go home (back to Hardy) until KDE4.2 and Amarok2 are part of the standard Kubuntu setup. Thanks to those above who offered suggestions. Much appreciated.
