Amarok - Large Collections and RAM

Wed Feb 25, 2009 7:25 pm
Hi!

I am chomping at the bit for Amarok 2 to arrive, but in the interim I have a few questions:-

1.  I have a collection of 177, 000 songs on a USB drive which when run through windows takes +/- 4 hours to import the songs.  With Amarok 1.4 it dies after 2 days as there are 'too many .rm or .ra files'.  Will Amarok 2 recitfy this problem and can I expect the import to be more efficient?
2.  When my collection is imported (up until it crashed) the performance on selecting or searching for songs (Using MySQL database) is rather slow.  I do think however that this may be RAM related.  Besides the usual recommendation of "as much as you can get" how much RAM should supply a usable performance?

And thanks for the hard work guys - I'm loving it! :)

One of the features included in the Amarok2 collection scanner is that if it encounters too many bad files it will stop (as in amarok 1.4) however the scanner will restart and continue from where it left off (apparently). This should mean that even though it could take a very long time, it should eventually build the entire collection (minus .rm & .ra files).

Not sure exactly how much RAM you SHOULD need for optimum performance, but I've not noticed any performance hit searching in a collection of 20k tracks with 2 GB system RAM. I'm on OS X though, and the RAM usage is a bit different. Obviously not as large a collection either. Someone else could probably give you more info there.
