Upgrade from FC8 and Amarok 1.4.10 to FC10 and Amarok 2.0.1 was a disappointment

Amarok 2.0.1
Fedora Core 10 on x86_64
"Using KDE 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0)" (however, otherwise using Gnome)

Issues (if compared to 1.4.10):
1. No option to have the old user interface :(
2. Sometimes does not let enter data into the fields when entering track details
3. When updating iPod, the songs get stored in a way that I can only hear them in random order
4. When updating iPod, does not clearly show which songs were successfully transferred and which not
5. Songs in the playlist get shown in strange way: First they might show nicely, that is one album with all songs numbered one after another. Next time you open Amarok and the same playlist, there is most certainly a few songs shown differently with default CD cover or the right cover tag although they are all from the same album (strange instability)
6. Slow feedback when pressing control buttons
7. Screen used inefficiently: the middle part used for useless data which I cannot get completely rid of
8. In the playlist, I can configured that I want to see field "year", which I can't see
9. CTRL key does work as a selection key with mouse (as used to)

Probably more issues to report once I really start using this new version, although I would like to continue using 1.4.10, because it was the best of its genre! :)

If you think 2.0.1 is disappointing think yourself lucky you didn't try 1.9!

There are loads of features missing from Amarok 2 but it is getting there.  If you are prepared to give it a go and try to forget about the 'missing' features then I think it will grow on you.

Thanks for the encouragement! I think I have no other option than to wait...

Somebody complained about double entries. I bumped into this too. Caused by moving music to another place. And since there is no Rescan, there is no way out..:(

Is there any other way to get updates than wait for Fedora to provide them? rpms anywhere else?

Gracias

One more thing to report, it slipped my mind...

The duration in playlist is more or less rubbish, does not directly relate to the real length of the song. And at the right end of the progress the real length appears negative...

Was it so that the whole Amarok had to be rewritten? 1.4.10 would have had everything for the rest of my life.

Oh no, even progress bar does not show correct length, but I realized that might partly be due to VBR coding so I guess I need to listen them through first. However, negative lengths are weird. And XMMS showed pretty correct lengths very soon after starting the song?!

Noone is stopping you from staying with Amarok 1.x. You could use it until the end of time ;)

Well, well, that sounds interesting! ;)

How to do it then? I wouldn't want to revert back to Fedora Core 8. Neither would I want to use another distribution. I tried to reinstall it onto FC10, but some libraries were incompatible... Build from sources?

Give up and accept that Amarok 2 is here to stay, I did!

On the surface it is lacking a lot of features that 1.4 had (has) but underneath it is considerably improved.

For example, i have a Samsung T10 MP3 player which uses the MTP format.  In version 1.4 I had to set up the connection manually (after ensuring the required libraries were installed).  But in version 2 I just plug it in and it works!

Today's observations:
I have digitized music from analogue source, converted songs to MP3 and then let Amarok find them. After that I have filled the ID fields including the track number either based on file name data or manually.
1. Layout Chooser opens every time!? Apparently due to missing Modify Layout button...
2. On the left in the collection, songs can be listed in an odd order, for instance I have song #3 in place of the song #1 under one album. I think if track number has been given in ID data, that should be the sole key used for ordering the songs within one album?!

One more observation:

I am moving songs to Various Artists in my Collection expecting that the Album name makes all of those songs appear under that name in Various Artists. Well, it does, but the Album name and the songs appear three times in Various Artists?!

Is there some other key that distinguishes the songs? Genre and Year are the same and I can't see any other fields when I "edit track details"  for the Album name...

Well, now there are already 6 albums with the same name and contents...?!

One other thing that bothers me when doing this is that the view changes and shows me the contents of Various Artists although I would expect it to show the location I was moving to Various Artists.

FedoraForum has a good topic on setting up Amarok 1.4 on F10.

Amarok 1.4 in F10

PS. And if you manage to wait just a little bit longer, Amarok 2.1 will be worth the wait. It's a huge improvement over Amarok 2.x.

Both ideas sound good! I have already compiled 1.4.10 again in my PC, but haven't yet figured how to get iPod support along...

You really mean all the goodies will come back to 2.* later on...? Option to have plain view = more data on screen, clear way to copy songs to iPod, level meter, quick way to set all IDs for songs...?!?! If yes, then I prefer waiting...:)

Eventually the most of the features will come back to Amarok 2.

Here you will find a rather good review of the stuff that's currently in SVN: Amarok 2.1 - back to the future..

And here you will find in detail what the improvements are over 2.0.x: ChangeLog.

And markey has an old blog entry on the features that will most likely return (and which don't): Missing features in Amarok 2

Plain view will be possible in 2.1 and already is in svn. The new Playlist Configurator will enable you to have your playlist look _exactly_ as you wish.
