hello i want to be able to install the latest development version beside the stable amarok 2.0.2 and be able to keep them completely separate.

im using openSuSE 11.1 with KDE 4.2 and have both amarok 1.4 and 2.0.2 installed form the openSuSE build service.

I subscribe to the question, it would be very convenient to have an easy way to do so (only replace openSuSE by Fedora in my case)

It's technically possible, but it would involve slightly complicated trickery - or even very complicated trickery, depending on your distro and how you are installing it.

In general I would recommend using only 2.1-beta1, as it is more stable in many regards than the 2.0.x series.

PS:
If you want to do it, I'd keep the distro provided package for 2.0.2, and then build Amarok from SVN in your $HOME, following the instructions in my guide:

http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/989 ... pdate.html

Even if you do that, you will have have to deal with the problem of conflicting configurations, if you use it from the same account. By default both versions are going to use the same paths, which will lead to tears and disaster.

To get around this problem, you would have to set the $KDEHOME variable to a different path for each Amarok version. You could do this by starting it with a mini script or a shell alias.

So you see, it's doable but not exactly trivial ;)

i will most likley just compile it on a vm to test it out and if i find it stable enough i will use it on my normal setup and just be sure to back up my amarok dir in the kde4 dir incase things go bad.
