Amarok skips track after few seconds

Mon Jun 01, 2009 11:25 am
Hi!

I have seen a few posts on the Internet about this issue and even one similar on this forum, but it hasn't helped me solve it.

I have been having this problem for quite some time (about a year I guess). Amarok sometimes skips to the next track after playing first few seconds of the track. Occasionally it does the same with the next track. I am using Amarok 1.4.10 on Debian testing, crossfading 1.5s, and the filesystem with MP3s is VFAT (so I can share the songs with windoze).
I am NOT using "Now playing" widget in KDE (not that I'd know of it, anyway - would I know?).

I have a strong suspicion the problem could be connected to disk read speed because access to this partition is sometimes slow (quite old machine, slow disk and FAT fs).

Could it be that Amarok prefetches a few seconds of the song, starts to play it, and if it can't read the next part of buffer it skips to the next song?

Is there an error log in Amarok?

This is the post on ArchLinux about the similar problems:
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39411

And this is the post on this forum about similar symptoms, but the solution doesn't apply to my case: (no "Now playing" widget)
http://amarok.kde.org/forum/index.php?topic=16805.0

I would appreciate some help because this is very annoying.

Thanks,

Andrew

EDIT: fixed wrong link. :)

The topic you've linked, was about A2.
So, it's generally nice to put the Amarok version into the subject. (Uups, have I?)
Turn off crossfade and check, if it helps.

Sorry, didn't know that - it's 1.4.10. I wouldn't know about 2. Also, I'm using Xine engine.

I have turned off crossfading, but I hope bug surfaces again soon because it seems weird to me playing music without it. :)

So, no error log I guess? :) Would package amarok-dbg help me find the reason?

Thanks,

Andrew

Check this topic.
You shouldn't have too big expectations in getting it fixed (in fact turning off crossfading is the fix). 1.4.x has low to no priority and as you see the problem is known for a long time now.

Thanks!

Not the answer I was hoping for, but at least I know what's going on. :)
