I recently installed Amarok (using Macports), and after a little bit of wrangling it finally started up. One problem I noticed was that several folders in ~/Library/Preferences/KDE, including that one itself, had permissions incorrectly set.
This page was a lot of help in getting that far. No, I didn't compile it, but there are notes on building it with ports. It still isn't working quite right. While it does play music, it seems to be unable to add media or otherwise browse files (its current collection was presumably discovered automatically as the iTunes library). At startup, and any time you try to Add media, the following message appears in a dialog box:
Additionally, nothing happens when I plug in my iPod (5.5 Gen) - is this supported yet? (I have libgpod 0.7.0.0 from Macports installed, don't know what else is necessary). I'm running 10.5.7 on a MacBook Pro (vintage 2007) Amarok version is 2.0.1 (from Macports) Here's the console log that comes up at startup (before any action is taken):
