I have a 5 CD collection, Beethoven - Symphonies 1-9 (Complete). Each CD has a unique title, but when Amarok does the find it acts as if there were only one CD and puts all the 01's followed by all the track 02's... which really messes up listening to a symphony :-^

Here's the actual directory structure, FYI:

Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete), (CD1 Zagreb Philharmonic: Richard Edlinger):
Beethoven - Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete), (CD1 Zagreb Philharmonic: Richard Edlinger) - 01 - No. 5 in C Minor, Opus 97, Allegro con brio.mp3

Although it is generally a bad idea to use special chars in file-/pathnames (Comma in your case), amarok isn't interested in your folder structure, but in your id3 tags.
So it would be better to post the id tags here.
Anyway I would structure the folders in the following way:
Beethoven (should be obviously)
|_Symphonies No 1-9
|_CD1
|_CD2
|_CD3
|_CD4
|_CD5

It seems, that the albumtitle is the same for all tracks.
Normally it is not necessary to separate the disks in different folders.
You should use the TPOS frame (CD 1 of 5 for example) for that.

The structure is basically as set up by a 'jack -q' command. Sometimes I manually edit the jack.freedb files to modify the edit, but other than that all of my albums are simply in whatever state the 'jack' import put them. It's whatever is in the internet databases.

This did not happen the last time I used amarok, so it must be something that got changed in the new version that has caused the problem.

This should have the info you asked for though:

Nice, you know head and string command, but can you simply post the title of the album as shown in Amarok.
Or use mp3info2 to get the tags. No need to extract the strings from the mp3. Also any jack commands don't matter. Amarok is not interested in your local freedb version.
Just make a screenshot of Amarok runnung with the Beethoven entry expanded.
As written above the title tag will be Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete), I guess.

Here's a screenshot from my Amarok playing a 2CD set from Nina Simone.

I'm back now... I got overheating in the old box used for my music machine and it caused a 1TB disk to fail that had all the music on it, among other things and I've only just finished with the data recovery and backup restores to the new drive.

Here's your mp3info2

Title: No. 5 in C Minor, Opus 97, All Track: 1
Artist: Beethoven
Album: Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete) Year:
Comment: Genre: Blues

As I say, it is just whatever jack created. The reason I say that is that all of my music is as created by jack, so if these tags are not useful to amarok, amarok may not be practicable for me to use: I just simply would not have the time to go in and fix them manually. There are just too many unless the problem can be narrowed down to a fairly small number.

At the moment I have an ever worse problem going: after the disk update Amarok is no longer working. This is a multiple sound card machine, Ubuntu, and usually 'headless'. I run Amarok like this:

ssh -AX me@myhost.mydomain.com amarok &

The new problem is that amarok does not have any command line parameters to select /dev/audio1 instead of /dev/audio. I have the docs which keep talking about 'xine-engine configuration tab' and I have not a clue what it is or how to get to it. I am guessing it is something that might pop up in a KDE window manager if I were using one. I've looked around for some xine.conf in /etc and other places and found none; I looked through /lib/udev to see if I could change the default there without breaking things too badly; I've proven the sound is all working fine with

aplay -vv -D front:CARD=CA0106,DEV=0 track_01.wav

or

mpg123 -a /dev/audio1 *.mp3

so at the moment I can not get amarok to work at all. I could set up the .asoundrc file as the howto suggests, but without knowing how to make amarok use it I am at a bit of a loss.

@amon: You can configure Phonon ( Which Amarok uses to play all music ) through System Settings, or through "kcmshell4 kcm_phonon".

Okay, I am now back to where I was about a month ago. I got amarok working on my good sound card by extrapolating from http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/Udev and writing my own /etc/udev/rules.d/20-alsa static rules to make this non-motherboard sound card the default so that Amarok would pick it up. I cannot imagine any non-unix systems type doing this, but then again I guess such persons are not building a headless music box with multiple sound cards and only accessing it via ssh -AX either.

So, I am not back to the original issue of how to deal with amarok's desire to use the id's and pay no attention to file names. Suggestions are welcome.

Your album tag is Symphonies Nos. 1-9 (Complete)!
So the sort order of Amarok or any other player using tags is correct.
You must set your id3tags correctly by either using TPOS (Part Of Set) frame, or by setting the complete disk name as album (not recommended).
Using filenames is bad habit, because sorting is way harder.
And you should run your database and your collection (exported via NFS/SMB) on your headless machine and Amarok2 (using external MySQL)on your desktop machine(s).
