Rescan problems

Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:01 pm
I use Amarok 2.2 in Kubuntu 9.10 Alpha.
It works great but I have one (big) problem.
If I add an album to my collection Amarok rescan ALL my collection and it takes about 2 hours (I have 50.000+ songs).
I always had this problem:
viewtopic.php?f=115&t=74712
Now my installation is a fresh one.

Why do you rescan? Watching folders for change works fine for me, here. It sometimes doesn't show up completely, I once had a few tracks of one album missing, but after restart this works fine.

Also, why does your scan last that long? I have ~10'000 tracks and a full rescan only takes a few minutes.

Using Amarok 2.2-git, build of a few minutes ago, on Kubuntu 9.04 with KDE 4.3.1

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Do you have a local collection or is it on an external device?

Also, do you use the embedded MySQL database or an external one?

The best would be to actually file a bug about this in https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=amarok

External NTFS drive.
I tried with 2 different External DRIVE with 2 different computer and I get the same problem (since all the Amarok 2.* versions).
I use the standard local DB.
Is it there a guide to compile a bug report for Amarok?

Compile a bug report? You mean file a bug report I guess :) Did you try the link I gave you? Just make an account on https://bugs.kde.org previously, it's free :) AFAIR you already have one, don't you?

Because nobody can reproduce this problem.
You should really consider reorganizing your folder structure for your collection. The best suggested structures would be either

Artist -> Album

or, for a more detailed structure

Genre -> Artist -> Album

Some people even structure inside the artist folders by year.

With such a folder structure you can be sure that, once your initial scan is done (FYI, a full rescan takes approx 10 minutes for 10000+ tracks here for a collection located on an external USB Harddisk formatted as ext3), it's enough to activate "Watch folders for change" and have a very fast updating every time you change something.

Works fine here with Amarok 2.2-git.

If this still doesn't work, then something is wrong in your installation, but certainly not Amarok related.

Ok, I Will try to do like you suggest, but in Amarok 1.4 was working fine and it's not an installation problem because I tried with different HD, different computer, different Ubuntu versions and different installations :)

Did you reuse the same collection structure on all these installations?

Yes, and also in Amarok 1.4.
Now I'm changing the collection structure and than I will try again :)

Re: Rescan problems

Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:23 pm
I'm having the same issue. After speaking to Jeff on irc, i reorganized my directory structure. It used to be artist - album, so i changed it with a script to artist/artist - album, and i'm still having the same issues. Though now it only seems to be when i modify an existing album or add a new artist.

I'm using the Git 2.2 version. And i didn't have these problems in 2.1, so something has obviously changed since 2.1. But a 30 minute wait for adding an artist, or modifying an album is a bit extreme, and at this point becoming downright annoying. I haven't tried turning off 'watch for changes' though i will give that a try.

As i remember in 2.1 and previous versions though, it did not have this behaviour. It would take about 10 seconds to update if i added new albums or artists. I don't think everybody should be forced to change their folder structure either, most would probably prefer to jump ship. And i changed mine, just because i like Amarok, but it still hasn't solved the issue.

The problem is, I can't reproduce any of these problems, all this works fine here in 2.2-git. It did not so in 2.1.1....

Re: Rescan problems  Topic is solved

Sat Sep 26, 2009 4:11 pm
I probably should have mentioned, i have quite a large collection. Over 3000 albums and over 1400 artists. Not sure if thats relevant, but i'm not sure what else could be different from people with and people without the problem.

I'll list the dependencies i built it on, i guess people will have different versions...

libmysqlclient 5.1.38-1
kdebase-runtime 4.3.1-1
kdelibs 4.3.1-1
phonon-xine 4.3.1-2
qt 4.5.2-7
qtscriptgenerator 0.1.0-1
strigi 0.7.0-1
taglib 1.6-1
taglib-extras 1.0.1-1

Not sure what else i can provide to help out. Would running in debugging mode help at all?
