Amarok going down, must force quit

Sat Sep 26, 2009 7:03 pm
Hello. Thanks for reading. I've been using Amarok a lot since I got my laptop and it started out working fine. Lately it has been going "grey" a lot lately, making me use "force quit" and then having to go and "kill" the process before I can start it again. It normally happens when i double click a song in my music folders (amarok is default player for all my mp3's), or when I try to drag a song into the program. I tried making sure it was updated, to no avail. Has Amarok been known to be buggy with Gnome? I mean, since it is a KDE App. (I understand most of Linux, except the whole Gnome/KDE difference) I assume since I am able to run it maybe I just need another package or settings change for compatibility?

I realize my problem is vague, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Specs:
Dell XPS M1330
Intel Dual Core 2.16ghz
4gb memory

Thanks,

Could you please start with telling us which exact version of Amarok you are talking about? There is a menu entry in 'Help' -> 'About Amarok' that informs about the version.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

I'm using 1.4.9.1. (using KDE 3.5.10)
Everyone on this forum mentions version 2.0 or higher. Yet my system claims I have the latest version.
Still researching...

Well, if you are using KDE 3.5.10, the latest version is indeed 1.4.9.1. You should talk to your distribution about this (which you didn't tell us neither btw), since Amarok 1.4.x is no longer maintained by the Amarok team, unless somebody on this forum knowns a solution.

In general, your hardware specifications have little relevance, but what is important to know for us is the software information, e.g. the Amarok and KDE version as well as the actual distribution you are using.

Sorry. I'm using Ubuntu, 8.04 Hardy. So if the Amarok team no longer maintains v1.4, does that mean that Ubuntu users can't upgrade? I guess i'm confused.

If it doesn't work out that's okay.
Thanks again.

Of course you can upgrade, there is Amarok 2.1.1 in Kubuntu 9.04 (aka Jaunty), and 9.10 (aka Karmic) will ship Amarok 2.2. But as both the KDE 3.5.x series and Amarok 1.4.x series are not maintained anymore, you use them at your own risk.

FYI, the KDE 3.5 part of Hard is *not* LTS anyway, so you might well give Karmic a try once it's released (Release date is October 29th).
