Thank you for your answers.
I checked Kmix and alsamixer, and I think that all values are correct: all important values are at 100%. I also tried to change modes to 2 channel and 4 channel, but Amarok still no doesn't sound. What configuration folders or files do you recommend me to delete in order to get Amarok sounds? Regards. |

Just to be sure, since it wasn't clear to me if you actually have xine installed or if you are just talking about the phonon-xine backend.... Verify that libxine1-plugins is installed. Verify that xine-ui is installed and that you can run Xine and get sound from it. Later, Seeker |

Thank you for your answer. I have installed all the packages you say: libxine1-plugins, xine-ui, and also phonon-xine-backend and, with other programs, like VLC or xine, I have sound but no with Amarok. In my KDE multimedia settings I have xine as engine, and it is the only option. Regards. |

Hi,
After a lot of tests, I arrived at a conclusion that the problem of no sound on Amarok and other KDE applications was caused by phonon, so I searched problems with that layer, and at it web page I found that I should agree a line to my .asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf in order to detect correctly my sound car, wich it's duplicated. I agree this line: hint { show on description "Name to display for the device" } and then, I selected the dispositive on multimedia settings. After that, my Amarok sounds. Regards. |

I had the same problems with the same soundcard (CS46xx) with a brand new slackware-current installation.
The .asoundrc workaround did not help in my case. I needed to switch to the GStreamer backend (instead of xine) and the "default" device instead of the CS46xx device. Removing all configuration files was required, too. Dragon Player and Kaffeine still do not work (endless loop in Dragon Player and empty error message box in kaffeine), so i have to use SMPlayer until there is a better solution. Can this be considered as a bug? |

The issues with Dragon Player and Kaffeine are related to issues with the GStreamer backend.

To give my solution back to the community:
- if there is no amarok sound use pavucontrol and check that the sound for "amarok: audio stream" is not muted in the playback tab (amarok needs to be running to see the entry "amarok: audio stream" in pavucontrol)!!!: [dan@monteverdi.eu ~]$ pavucontrol - I use fedora 12 with phonon-backend-xine (default) and phonon-backend-gstreamer in Amarok - I don't know how I deactivated it?? - see also http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?30,48153 Open Source is great! |

When playing via digital out you can run into a lot of trouble.
In my case I had to change the configuration in the pulse mixer (not kmix) to "Digital Stereo Output". I still don't understand why Pulse was used even though I changed the output device to "Alsa digital" in the KDE settings. Also sometimes Alsa might be blocked when another application is using it. |

I am having the same issues as those already noted.
I was able to sound working, I found if I disabled the HEADPHONES under Kmix then sound in other applications worked, When even I launched an app I would be a very brief click like it was trying to enable the sound, and then it suddenly shuts off. I was able to get sound from Amarok 2.2.2 and Dragon Player, I could not get sound from FF, Songbird, Clementine. Sound's more like a HAL type issue where the headphones are being enabled when headphones are not plugged in. I didn't try plugging in some headphones to see if this was just a T/F issue. I did a re-install last week-end(before I had issues), I found the same issue before I upgraded to 4.4, and I did not have this issue before I did the re-install. Version: Linux uDad 2.6.31-19-generic #56-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 28 02:39:34 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux |

@rengels: Pulseaudio severely interferes in the operation of KDE applications, in particular the Phonon framework. If it does not fully intercept Phonon's output, then Sound breaks. When it succeeds at intercepting, Phonon's settings are not respected.

That maybe the case, but Pulseaudio is the only thing that solved this sad sound issue for my system. |

And a new strange behaviour that I would like to document here.
After playing around too much with alsarc SW volume and devices suddenly kde stopped playing sounds. In the multimedia settings pressing the test button it stayed depressed. Amarok would not move the song timeline. It would just stay. Kde would not play the start sound and would not stop (I guess because the end-sound also wouldn't play) On the other hand a new test user had no such problems. The offending file was ~/.kde/share/config/servicetype_profilerc It contained some phonon settings. Removing this file cleared the problem. |
