Creative ZEN and 2.2.0

Tue Nov 24, 2009 3:19 am
Hello all,

I have a 4GB Creative ZEN and Amarok 2.2.0 on Ubuntu 9.10. It used to work perfectly on Amarok 1.4.*, but now when I plug it in it only sees two tracks, Travelsound.AVI and X-Fi.AVI. I don't know whats up with that being as those two tracks do not appear on the device, however, lots of other tracks do. Im afraid to modify the device using amarok until it once again correctly reports my device. Any ideas guys?

I really don't know what it is with the Zen, but I know that it creates problems more often than other players do. Amarok uses libMTP for accessing these devices, so it's not directly in our hands.

Anyway, just for comparison, I'm personally using a MTP device too, with Amarok 2.2.1, here are some of the impressions:

I really like my zen, and cant afford new toys, so unfortunately, changing media devices is not really an option for me :( . I will have to find a way to get amarok to work.

it DID work perfectly with 1.4.*, and now it is seen and accessed, but amarok seems to look in the wrong folder or something....

EDIT:: It IS looking in the wrong folder. It looks in the Video folder instead of the Music folder

FYI:

I tried and connected my Zen Vision with Amarok 2.2.1 without any problems.

can you switch from mtp to msc protocol on the Zen? Would that suffice?

Have you upped to 2.2.1? What mtp libs are you running?

I checked and I have libmtp8 installed.
This is what I find of it in Synaptic under properties/installed files:
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8/AUTHORS
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8/TODO.gz
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8/copyright
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8/README.gz
/usr/share/doc/libmtp8/changelog.Debian.gz
/usr/share/hal
/usr/share/hal/fdi
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty
/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty/20-libmtp8.fdi
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/libmtp.so.8.2.2
/lib
/lib/udev
/lib/udev/rules.d
/lib/udev/rules.d/45-libmtp8.rules
/usr/lib/libmtp.so.8

It looks like I can't switch to msc.

Version I use: Amarok 2.2.1 on KDE 4.3.3

You can't switch to MSC mode from Amarok, of course not, that can only been done from the player. Check your player options, there should be one.

Running Kubuntu 22.10 with Plasma 5.26.3, Frameworks 5.100.0, Qt 5.15.6, kernel 5.19.0-23 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it's always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

msc protocol changes the player so that it looks and acts like a flash drive

You can use the Creative Zen as an MSC device, but it will not be able to play any music transferred to it that way. As far as I know, in order to actually play music, it has to be transferred via MTP. I think it was designed this way so that you could play DRM-protected music on it if you wanted to.

A couple of questions: first, when your Creative Zen collection shows up in "Local Music", how many tracks does it say it has? I know you said it only displays those two tracks, but do the others at least contribute to the total track count? Also, what are your collection sorting options? For me, Amarok doesn't report the correct tracks on my Zen if I sort by Album only; try switching to the default Artist/Album sorting option in Amarok. Kind of crazy, I know, but it's what works for me.

Another thing you can do if you can't get Amarok to work is use Gnomad2 to connect to your Zen; I've never had any problems with it. Although I do have to make sure I actually quit Amarok before Gnomad2 can pick up my mp3 player.
