What can you do with a DAP or iPod?

Okay, ;) I know what you are thinking. But really, back in Amarok 1.4 I was able to plug in my iPod, drag a FLAC file onto it's icon, and the transcode script I downloaded turned the file into an AAC file so it could be played by the iPod.

It took me a couple of weeks to figure out how to see my iPod as a separate collection in the 2.x GUI, but I get no transcode action. Browsing for scripts doesn't give me much but lyrics plugins.

I have amassed a collection of FLAC files (ripped from my CDs and ready to be down-encoded to whatever format works for my player of the day). I'd like to be able to transcode on-the-fly if you will. What API's exist (scripts?) to set up Amarok to realize that a file must be transcoded before it is copied to a collection? Is there an API for DAPs like iPod to specify the desired format and possibly quality? I am trying to gather some information to either port the old transkode script or write a new one, seeing how there is an opportunity here.
