i have the latest version of amarok installed on ubuntu 9.10.
i'm having a small issue playing mp3 files on a windows media server on my home network. the music will play, but in most cases when the files start playing there is a number of pauses/delays before the song continues to play normally. i'm guessing that this is some kind of buffer/resource related issue. is there any way to adjust amarok settings so that it will play the music without these pauses/delays? i've read that there is a xine-config file which has a buffer setting that can be adjusted for better network performance, but i don't have this file on my system for some reason. thanks. |

Hello,
looks like you're using buggy gstreamer backend. I don't have an english system handy, but it should be sth. like Settings->Amarok->Playback->Soundsystem->Backend: Xine The config file is ~/.xine/config and the option is engine.buffers.audio_num_buffers This would only work, if your Windoze server is streaming of course. If the media is mounted, you should add io-params to your mount options. Regards m0nk

thanks, i checked the setup for amarok and it is using xine for the backend. the music is streaming from a windows server on my home network. i also opened the ~/.xine/config file with gedit but the file is empty, there's nothing in it. how should i proceed to change the buffers setting? |

Uups, sorry,
here's the default: engine.buffers.audio_num_buffers:230 You can try to increase the value up to 500 approximately. Regards m0nk

Don't know if the '~/.xine/config' configuration affects the phonon-xine backend, it has it's own configuration '~/.config/kde.org/Phonon-Xine.xine.conf', at least this seemed to be the file I had to edit on my system, could be different in different distributions.

That's correct, but the phonon one is normally commented out completely. So the values of the global user's one are used.
If you enter the value in the phonon specific config only Phonon will use them. Regards Dieter

It's been a while since I messed with it so things could have changed.
At the time when I was messing with it the XV support with my combination of video card and driver wasn't messed up, so it was immediately obvious when using Dragon player to watch a video that changing the video output in the normal xine configuration files was not doing the trick. Later, Seeker |
